Heh... I wonder how many of those early adopters will be pissed when the 2nd generation iPads come out! Odds are that it will be faster, cheaper, have twice as much storage space, and have a built in video camera.

Trust me, I learned this lesson the hard way after spending $300 on a first generation Blu-Ray player. It takes about 4 minutes to load a movie, and it needed about half a dozen firmware updates before it worked properly with most movies. Two years later, I bought a new model for $99 that was twice as fast, and could do streaming Internet video.

and???

That's nothing new. It's been going on ever since we've ever had technology. Early adopters always pay the most for the latest and new stuff comes out very fast.

Adoption rate is a statistic, and the ipad has beaten DVDs which previously held the highest adoption rate statistic.

The DS sold ~16 Million units in its' first year, perhaps my math has gotten a bit rusty, but I think that is slightly better then 350K.

I don't know anybody that owns one either. iPhones yes, iPads no.

So who IS buying them?

It's the IN thing for all the senior managers, VP's and above at my work. They all have iPhones and iPads hooked up to corporate email for whatever reason.

Away from work the only person I know that has one is a friend of my wife's.

If it's an Apple product, it doesn't matter what it is, it's going to sell well. Even if only Apple fans bought it, there's so many of them it's guaranteed to be a success. Just like the iPhone 4. How many people never had an iPhone before yet bought an iPhone 4. That's a statistic I'd like to see. How many new users they get. How many people have never bought an Apple product before yet bought an iPad or the new iPhone 4.

The only products I like from Apple is their laptop and their phone. I've owned only 1 version of each thus far. I don't update my computers often and as for my next phone its either going to be iOS or Android.

none of my family has one, nor do my coworkers (big hospital). So no, I don't know anyone who owns one.

Its called a book. You can buy hundreds of them for the price an iPad is going for.

Books don't offer some of the interactivity found with some of the edu apps on an iPad/iPhone.

I am a supporter of books. I am a voracious reader, depending on genre, and will finish a 500 page book in days. I read to my daughter every other night in English while my wife takes over the other nights by reading to my daughter in Chinese.

The DS followed the Gameboy, so it was not considered a new technology to be adopted.

And the iPad is a derivative of the iPod Touch.

Actually a different way to look at it is that the iPod Touch is a derivative of the iPad. If the iPad was the idea all along, it actually makes a certain degree of sense to intro the UI dynamics using smaller devices like phones and mp3 players.

However, your rebuttal to the other person's point is valid. Can't we just simply say that the iPad is selling really well?

When I was working as a lawyer a couple years ago, I really wished I could have a tablet that could access the Internet and read PDFs on the go, between the office and the courthouse. The iPad fits those purposes perfectly. I'm just surprised it's been out this long and there hasn't been any real competition to it yet, and probably not until early next year.

PDFs? Uh, Lawyers also print out stuff. And have Laptops. That covers all basis in general.

How are you going to get your briefs and arguments even onto the iPad?

Trust me, it isn't going to happen.

That's probably not the business making they do at Apple Inc.

It's Ipod -> Interfacing
Mac interfacing
Ipod + Mac Interfacing - > Phone Market OS (iPhone)
Use versatile iPhone OS in any profit making way possible = Ipod Touch, which = Iphone - Phone calling chip
Use iPhone OS to pursue untapped or immature ones - > iPad

The Tablet market has always existed, but every manufacturer has so utterly failed to address the primary attractions of a tablet, that it was basically a treasure mine that no one else knew how to access.

I'm getting an iPad too, but I KNOW Apple's business model. It's introduce just enough to rope in the first generation adopters and leave out key features like USB, Adobe Flash etc ....

Second generation

= USB .... OMFG APPLE IS GENIUS CUZ USB AWESUM!!!
= Flash .... OMFG HULU YALL SUCK IT NON-APPLE USERS HAHAHHA
= Front camera .... OMFG I CAN SEE WHO I'M TALKING TO LIKE ALL AROUND THE HOUSE!!

So yea, it's coming. I'm getting one. It's going to be an awesome fapping device.

Currently the iPads do not have printing enabled I believe. This is highly retarded. I think it'll be enabled in iOS 4.2 but it should have had this out of the gate.

Trust me, it isn't going to happen.

There are office and pdf apps that can sync with stuff like Box.net, Dropbox, Google Docs and MobileMe as well as sync over wifi. I know Quickoffice for one can do this.

Trust me, it does happen.

Yes, they do print out the important stuff, the documents filed with the court. But other documents or a copy of regulations or statutes is handy to have around in electronic form. These days any decent firm has all of their documents scanned into electronic form. And it's more convenient to view them on a tablet rather than a laptop when you're not at a desk.

Yes, but all Firms use document management.

What document management integration offers a secure solution to putting stuff onto an iPad?

Nothing that I know of.

You can work around them maybe, but it probably is more work than using a laptop.

The iPad followed a slew of comparable technology- Notebooks, Netbooks and particularly Tablets and smartphones. The DS was every bit as much of a new technology as the iPad.

Well considering the iPad isn't even the first tablet to ever go on the market.......

I can't say from experience as I don't have an iPad yet, but this site gives one example of how a lawyer might use it:
http://www.wisecwa.com/digitaloffice/?p=449

And most documents I've worked with as an attorney were Word or PDF files anyway. I haven't come across any system yet that didn't at least allow me to export to PDF.

I know 4 people with ipads other than myself.

When i was flying this weekend, there were about 3 ipads in the first class seating section. I think there were like 12 seats total? So, 1/4th of the people in the first class seating had an ipad. This was the same on the trip to dallas and the trip back, but with different people.
