Amusing to watch some of you whine about OP (correctly) identifying it as a democrat submitted bill. When some idiot says something stupid about rape or whatever topic, there's a bunch of posts about republicans and their 'war on women' and other such tripe. When a slew of democrats all over the country make unbelievably stupid statements about gun control (hey, use a pen, or maybe fire your shotgun in the air illegally a couple of times!), then of course we shouldn't use a broad brush.

Lets not forget about our pal Earnest Smith, a democrat who wants to criminalize photochopping pics. Silverstein, Smith and their ilk are all alike, they want to squash any freedoms that could result in people doing things they don't like. And no, I don't think repubs are any better, but it's funny to see lefties whine about someone doing the same thing they usually do.

As to your question, this is really a semantic issue regarding what "trolling" means. I will readily admit I found Incorruptible's threads, at best, clutter, and since they were overwhelmingly Islamophobic trash I would in fact call them sheer bigotry. In the interest of deterring him from posting more of them I repeatedly discouraged others from posting in them by posting this image (or variants of it):

I will readily admit my posts were not on topic, because I thought the topics were bogus and posted only to incite bigotry. If you want to call that trolling (a word which has no established dictionary definition), I was trolling. I myself would not call that trolling, I'd call it attempting to blunt the effects of trolling by Incorruptible. I think the OP in this instance is trolling because he is using what isn't really a partisan issue into yet another of his endless stream of "Democrats are evil idiots" posts. I think that is counter-productive in a political discussion forum.

Digital harassment is another problem which is still being sorted out. If you mailed an anonymous letter with a return address containing half of what's said on this forum every day you would definitely receive a visit from the police.

Please do not take this as an endorsement of the bill.

If we want to understand freedom of expression we need to be able to differentiate between criticism and censorship.

I don't think of Wikipedia as a primary source (that isn't really what it's for), but yes, if that is "the" definition of trolling, I was trolling.

I don't think this is a good idea, but I also don't see how it's a partisan issue, and think both the OP and its title are trolling.

Anonymous Internet posts are legally interesting because the anonymity of the Internet makes it possible to post defamatory things about a person without retribution. I am OK with having a discussion regarding the ramifications of that, but I don't think this is something that should be regulated. I would think most forum hosts and ISPs would probably remove anonymous, disparaging comments about a person upon that person's request anyway, for fear of being sued for defamation.

They certainly are interesting. Like Dave, I choose to make my real name available. However, Joe the Plumber can demonstrate the perils of that approach if one falls afoul of those in government. Other people may have legal, business or other valid reasons not to reveal their names. As Bobber Fett says, in political speech the views of the minority can be crushed - which is important because most good ideas start out as a minority opinion.

Yeah, it's a stupid bill, but it's also one that directly benefits politicians. Never underestimate a politician's stupidity on something that benefits him; they're crazy like foxes.
