A recently introduced bill in the Illinois state Senate would require anonymous website comment posters to reveal their identities if they want to keep their comments online.

The bill, called the Internet Posting Removal Act, is sponsored by Illinois state Sen. Ira Silverstein. It states that a “web site administrator upon request shall remove any comments posted on his or her web site by an anonymous poster unless the anonymous poster agrees to attach his or her name to the post and confirms that his or her IP address, legal name, and home address are accurate.”

The Democratic lawmaker’s bill, which does not ask for or clarify requirements from entities requesting the comment removal, would take effect 90 days after becoming law.

Before the usual idiots start trolling, rage, rage, rage, Faux News, Republicans did it first, yadda yadda yadda.

Fact is, we have another Democrat who hates freedom of speech and doesn't understand that the internet isn't bound by things like some random state's law. Color me surprised.

Just because one party shoots itself in the foot it shouldn't make members of the other party think it's ok to be idiots

I don't think this is a good idea, but I also don't see how it's a partisan issue, and think both the OP and its title are trolling.

Anonymous Internet posts are legally interesting because the anonymity of the Internet makes it possible to post defamatory things about a person without retribution. I am OK with having a discussion regarding the ramifications of that, but I don't think this is something that should be regulated. I would think most forum hosts and ISPs would probably remove anonymous, disparaging comments about a person upon that person's request anyway, for fear of being sued for defamation.

No shit Sherlock. This forum is one big pile of troll threads.

Benjamin Franklin and others wrote under many pseudonyms, one of the reasons was to avoid persecution in a tense political climate. There's really no discussion to be had. Without anonymity, the minority opinion will be silenced.

In the case of abuse of free speech such as some posters on here such as Jowo and lopped this is desperately needed.

The days of pussys hiding behind a monitor are numbered as they should be.

So that's what you want this forum to be? Honestly I find this kind of sentiment hard to understand. It's as though someone caught you letting your dog shit on his lawn and, when he protested, you just shrugged and said, "Hey, dogs shit. What can you do?"

And what do we do with defamation or libel? Why do we enforce it in some forms of media but not others?

Digital harassment is another problem which is still being sorted out. If you mailed an anonymous letter with a return address containing half of what's said on this forum every day you would definitely receive a visit from the police.

Please do not take this as an endorsement of the bill.

Sounds like the basis for the 4th amendment, and privacy. A government that knows everything may silence everything.

Shouldn't matter whether a republican or democrat came up with this idea, it is still stupid regardless. It is simply a little less surprising that a democrat came up with this bill because the democratic party in general is more whiny about things like this than the republican party (and act like they can actually have jurisdiction over the internet lol). This isn't to say republicans don't whine about the same stuff, as some obviously do, but not to the same extent.

I have posted my address numerous times and it is easily searchable.

This is my real name.

I don't think I could "step up" anymore than I have.

I have extended an invitation to anyone on here hiding behind their monitor to meet me face to face.

When can I expect to see you?

While I think it's an ignorant bill, freedom of speech does not guarantee anonymous speech. Two completely different things.

Says another prolific troll. You and the OP are peas in a pod.

Oh here you go. You get in BoberFett's shit about trolling when the forum is full of trolls and you are guilty of the same. How many threads did you troll because Incorruptable "trolled"? Wasn't that the reasoning you used? How about you judge yourself first before others? Easy to point fingers but hard to hold yourself to the same standard. Your only defense is calling me a troll? As if that will deflect from your own self righteous behavior. Show us how much integrity you have. Respond by admitting that you trolled Incorruptable because he was trolling and I'll drop it. You won't because you are "too respected" here and that might hurt your little standing. Let's see the heart of "Don Vito Corleone" now.....I'm not holding my breath.

Sure it doesnt gurantee anom speech. But since when can the govt restrict freedom of speech on a privately run msgboard?

Libel laws should cover this crap anyways.

I will never tell you who I am because you are mentally unhinged and you've already made veiled threats against me as well:

http://forums.anandtech.com/showpost.php?p=34652338&postcount=4276

And calling me a pussy for not seeing you in person you did a few months ago also.

Considering you were already put on probation years ago and narrowly missed prison time due to misuse of technology it's quite amazing you continue to push the boundaries of what is legal. If I actually thought your veiled threats were anything more than the angry rantings of a buffoon, I'd already have gone to the authorities over it. But I know you're 100% bullshit so I don't really care.
