I thought that they were going to release the "mainstream" 8C/16T CPUs on 10nm(+? ++? +++?)

If they are going to "take their time" with 10nm and friends, and release ANOTHER CoffeeLake CPU, this time with 8 cores, rather than 6, with HT, then I guess I could forgive them slightly, for making Z370 CFL-only, as there will apparently be a CFL-R (refresh) 8C/16T CPU to drop in. That wouldn't be too bad, really.

To me, it just wouldn't make sense, to call both the 6C on 14nm++ process, and an 8C on 10nm+ process both "Coffee Lake". You would think that a totally different process, would warrant a new code-name, even if it's the same CPU Cores / same iGPU / same design, basically, just with higher core-count.

My motherboard just decided to pack it in and im running a i7-2600k. Its been very good to me but now I am in the sticky situation of:
1. Do I buy a replacement mobo for this chip.
2. Upgrade to a 7700k+mobo+ram which I can get now.
3. Somehow wait it out for Coffelake + mobo + ram

With Destiny 2 around the corner im going to need a running PC

Any suggestions team?

Coffeelake is too close to be buying a 7700K at the moment, you will be regretting it bigtime in just 2 short months.

Well, it's not the thread for it, but either get a Ryzen 5 1600X now, or wait, and get an i7-8700K, for gaming. Both are 6C/12T, which should serve you well for current and near-future gaming. Don't waste your money on a 7700K. (Because anything less than a 6C CPU, in the face of games like BF1 64 MP, and WatchDogs 2, is a waste.)

Apparently 5 October (release at least, but availability can't be that far off, maybe the same week). Hold tight and don't succumb to anything else and you won't regret it!

Based on the CPUID it is clearly another Kabylake derivate but with a newer stepping than even CFL 6C.

Less than a month. Probably 5th October if a screenshot from an ERP system that I saw floating around is accurate. Preorder pricing is already beginning to appear, so it would appear to be accurate:

Two real possibilities for this situation. Either IceLake is compatible with all Z3XX motherboards. Or the mentioned 8 core CPU with Z390 Chipset we will see next year is only CoffeeLake 8C/16T CPU, and IceLake is postponed or will have the same fate as CannonLake.

Motherboard manufacturers already have Ice Lake S CPU/platform info (status: released), so it's definitely coming to market. It would be great if Intel releases 8C CFL-S variants along Z390 around August 2018. The full ICL-S lineup could still make it to the market in early 2019, hopefully also supported by Z390, even if new chipsets are out by then.

I'm going with the i5K , that $ diff will go towards a new GTX1080

I'm still unconvinced: the release window matches that of ICL-S 8C, hence I am confident it's ICL. On the other hand I can see Intel releasing an 8C CFL-S part, which would alter the ICL time-line by 1 year and not in its favour. If you're right I wonder if it'll run in Z370...

I have a feeling, that we as enthusiast observers, that don't (*well, most of us) actually work in the industry, and what we see as a simple tick-tock on paper, is actually probably a myriad different hectic schedules, and it was probably a massive undertaking to keeping them all aligned, to give us the illusion of the tick-tock working out just fine.

Now we're seeing the reality behind it.
