It would be my choice, if it was not so freaking expensive. 7920x price is the max i am willing to potentially pay, and even that is too much. Anyway, 7940x´s ability to run 12 cores at 4GHz out of the box looks mint.

Going by specs alone (from http://www.anandtech.com/show/11698...cations-18cores-44-ghz-165w-on-september-25th), the 7940X is the Intel HEDT chip to get. These bullet points are for Intel and HEDT only:
  • For 1-4 core needs: the 7740X is fastest and cheapest. But, just wait for Coffee Lake.
  • For 5-6 core needs: all of the 7800X and above chips are about the exact same turbo speed. But again, just wait for Coffee Lake.
  • For 7-14 core needs: the 7940X is the fastest, is the most future proof, and isn't that much more expensive unless you really can get away with the 7820X.
  • For 15-18 core needs: just get the 7980XE since the 7940X can't do it.
The only time the 7900X or 7920X win is in price/performance is in very specific cases (where you know you need exactly 10 or 12 cores and never more); since they never win in performance and are only slightly cheaper.

Well, duh. But it is useful for emergencies and troubleshooting. Its a handy feature that you're losing while paying more money for the chip.
 
In Central Europe Intel seems to have better distribution network than AMD (less greedy) so as a result Intel gets an advantage here. A 1950X is $1300, 7900X is $1150. Official $ prices are relevant for US, but elsewhere they don't apply. Therefore 7940X will be a good competitor as price difference will be small in overall cost.

It's also very positive that 7980XE will get released much sooner than initially thought, in 1.5 months.

The 7740X is cheaper than the 7700k at B&H, about the same price at Newegg, and only $19 more at Amazon. They both have the exact same recommended customer price by Intel, although that is up to the retailer.

Your other points are valid though.
 
Someone at Intel has a bad sense of humor 😉 I think the 7960x should be nicknamed T-Rex or something similar to a ruthless hunter hehe. The 7960x submissions only targeted those benchmarks where Threadripper submissions had been made. Savage!

You can get 15% more performance and all you have to do is spend 70% more!

Do CPUs this expensive just exist to say "look, we're faster" even if nobody actually buys them in any meaningful quantity. Or have they sold well previously?

To possibly head off a criticism/preemptively straw man you all: I know people like to bring up the supercar analogy, but I think driving a McLaren P1 is a vastly different experience to driving a regular but still expensive sports car. With a CPU like this you're shaving off a few seconds of off long running tasks at best.

Nope! The $1,700 6950x was Intel's best-selling HEDT chip. 15% is a big deal for those who just can't have enough processing power in this niche space. Also if you're going to go crazy and spend upwards of $5k on a new system, $700 for 15%+ more performance is bearable.

Intel fans want nothing but the best, even if they have to pay 200% more than their closest competitor. Only 70% more is a bargain to them!
