Err... anything is better than Atom... Even their own cellphone version (Moorefield)

BTW... AMD is about to launch Bristol Ridge and seems that is using the final iteration of 28 nm GPU... Fiji one.

Pretty useless to build at least a HTPC based on current APUs. They don't support 4K decoding of any format, HEVC or VP9. Carrizo / Bristol Ridge / Stoney Ridge do support 4K & HEVC, but they are currently not available for DIY.

For other purposes than HTPC, they have too high power consumption and too little CPU performance. Price is the only thing they can even remotely complete in.

1. 4k users are not even 1%, saying it is useless to use those APUs for HTPCs doesnt comply with reality.

2. Kaveri is at its end of its carrier, this is a 2014 product soon to be replaced by AM4 and BristolRidge. BR is the actual competitor to Skylake/Kabylake.

3. For a SFF HTPC and gaming system, Kaveri have the CPU performance needed and Power consumption is fine even with a 95W TDP APU. Nobody will get a Core i7 GT4 $1000 Intel NUC to use it as workstation either.

I could easily say that Core i7 CPU performance in a NUC chassis is useless and the GT4 performance of the Skulake is not worth the price. But there are always people that will buy more for what they really need, just because they like it and they can afford it. But that doesnt mean that is what the majority does.

I'd build an AMD HTPC. They offer better support on the graphics/video side than Intel. Intel is better on the overall hardware on the top end.

AMD in average offers next-generation Intel GT2 levels of performance. For Intel you gotta wait a year for that. :D

Ouch... That is not as better than expected.. I was expecting GTX 750 Ti levels.

It's disappointing. Based on their "50%" claim I was expecting, not Ti, but regular GTX 750 levels. Which is mediocre. I was disappointed with "Geforce GTX 750" performance. I mean, that's barely ok for a $500 GPU last year! This year with Pascal offering 70% better perf/watt(30% lower TDP 20% better performance) its going to look like an $500 Geforce 930M. No wonder they are so quiet on the announcement. NUC is the only form factor it makes any little bit of sense in. Unless they cut the price to a 1/3 by offering it on the Core i3 models.

Based on the 3DMark11 score of 3200, that's 6% better than 65W Iris Pro 6200 and 16% better than 45W Iris Pro 6200.

Since their GT2 seems decent, I'd blame the GT4e falling flat on its face due to 14nm being crap. Almost everything Intel 14nm touches is bad. Core M, Knights Landing, GT4e, Atom. It's like finger of death for process.

Any skull canyon nuc news/reviews?

Haven't seen much yet in publications. I will plan to do some testing to add to the current CPU/iGPU benches I did in the NUC thread once I get the Core. Hoping I can maybe do some comparison against someone else here with a similar CPU, but not with an external GPU. :)

I doubt they did compare a much lower clocked 45W GT4 against a 65W desktop GT3 with much better thermal solution. But I'm aware you are in your usual troll mode once again, I don't think you are so stupid.

Actually Broadwell GT3e 65W is 10-30% off to a OC variant of GTX 750 in some newer games, so it's quite close to a default 750. GT4e 65W should beat this, probably even the OC variants.

Given that the 3dmark scores are lower than the scores from nucblog it is certainly not the best 3dmark11 score NUC6i7KYK can do. For you 3dmark may be all what matters, the real question how it performs in a game.

Version: Beta 15.40.23.4444 (Latest) Date: 4/29/2016

Edit: I know that I've bitched long and loud about Intel iGPU problems, especially HDMI audio handshake issues.

Well, I decided to do an experiment. I took one of my Z170 Pro4S ATX / G4400 rigs, and undid the BCLK OC (so I could use the iGPU). Installed the 4424 drivers (same as I had on my i3-6100 rig, the problematic one). Well, I set monitor shutoff to 1 minute, started internet radio playing, and not only did I not have to go to device managed and disable / re-enable the device like I do on my i3-6100, I was able to simply move the mouse, and the audio resumed directly.

So it appears to be Asus's POOR ENGINEERING that is responsible for my Intel iGPU driver woes. (Including BSODs with earlier drivers.)

It probably has something to do with this H110M-A mobo supporting VGA output, which is NOT officially supported on SKL or with Intel drivers. They probably internally use a HDMI-to-VGA adapter chip, and it probably confuses the driver initialization / sleep resume code somehow.

So it has been this GARBAGE ASUS mobo all along.

Their support is so great for this board, they STILL DONT have a BIOS update with the i3 / HT / Prime95 "fix" microcode.

NO MORE ASUS MOBOS FOR ME.

Edit: I tried the Intel iGPU driver 4444, still no dice. I did finally find a microcode update BIOS update for this board. I applied BIOS 503, still the same problems with the HDMI audio handshake.

These kinds of stories make me wish that Intel continued selling their own motherboards... *sigh* I never had a problem with my old Bad Axe 2 or the other PCs I built for friends and family with Intel boards.

Well that and the pathetically immature design language and marketing from the likes of Asus, GB and MSI. Rainbow LED rubbish with sad dragon tattoo lookalike motifs -- and don't forget the Fatal1ty crap too.

Asus is great if you like paying top dollar for the same features and an equal chance of having a problem. I think their only real claim to fame right now is the 2011-3 OC socket.

What would be the processor I should jump on if I want to upgrade from what I've got now? I was thinking another i5 or go with the i7 6700? I have the 6700hq in my laptop and it's decent.

Only 2 great upgrades for you are i7 6700k with a 4.5-4.8Ghz overclock, or the upcoming $419 i7 6800K on X99 with a 4.5Ghz overclock. i5-6600K is a waste of $ upgrade from an i5-2500K OC. Given how long you've kept the 2500K, skip i5 Skylake if you intend to keep this 2016 CPU u until 2020-2021. Also, if you are considering a new GPU for 1080p 60Hz, 1070/980Ti at the most. 1440p and above for GTX1080. Keep an eye out for fire sale after-market 980Ti cards in June.

Another option is to buy a GTX1070/980Ti/Polaris 10 and see how your current CPU does for the games you play. If you are happy with the performance, you may be able to wait it out until Skylake-E in 2017. At the same time, if you can resell Mobo+CPU+DDR3 now, I'd probably do that while the existing parts have some value.

FYI, I had 2500K and I got a 6700K so giving you the same advice I took myself. DDR4 prices are even better now. Go for 16GB DDR4 3200 for $75.

I was just checking out the 6700k on newegg. I think I'll go with that and a MSI z170A board which is $130. For the GPU I'm going to wait until both companies release their cards to see what's more economical for me.

It might make sense to go with a 980ti that's on sale once the new cards are out. 1080 gtx also caught my eye. But at least I can grab a new board, CPU and memory then just worry about the card later.

Imo, $600-700 1080 with a 1080p 60Hz monitor is a waste of $. Upgrade the monitor first if you are going to spend that much $ on a GPU. The extra frames on the 1080 for such low resolution will be wasted for the first 1.5-2 years of its life. Next year we'll have even faster cards for $699. You can buy a $380 1070, just sell it in 2 years and get Volta 2080 for $400. Way better than buying a $600 1080 and keeping it for 4 years.

If you are buying high end GPU gear, pair it with monitors that allow you to actually enjoy it. 144hz 2560x1440 is pure awesome. 4K 60 is probably cool too :p

Is there any news on Kaby Lake desktop? We're closing in on H2 2016 and there isn't even a thread about KL here. Does anybody know anything?

Yea the 1070 makes sense if I'm going to stick with 1080. I'll check some monitors and see if an upgrade is in my budget. Btw thanks for the ram link too. Pretty much what I was going to do.

And here we have a 3600 score.
