My gut reaction was to jump on this one as its so compelling to get a rare chip. In reality this chip eats tons of power. Also if its true that the multipliers are locked then i'd have to question whether or not these are the real deal or just another marketing scam.
Last but not least is the fact that these chips are pretty much maxed out to begin with so there isn't a lot of overhead left to play with. The strenght of this chip is certainly not games and the only other area where any kind of speed would make a big difference is in multimedia apps and i'm fairly sure a d805 would kick the snot out of it with a little tweaking.

OK, i had a 2.80c o/c'd to 3.31Ghz ... x1950p/512 ... getting 8,000 in 3DMark05

got my P43.4EE up to 3.74Ghz at just over stock vcore ... 222FSB - piece of cake for PC3500 at 1:1 and now getting 9280 in 3DMark05

you guys decide if it was *worth it*

it basically removed the CPU as a botleneck for my x1950p/512MB 😉

i *doesn't* "eat tons of power"

and it's *extra* 2MB L3 cache improves games ... by quite a lot ... it is competitive [now ... o/c'd] with the Athlon FX51/53

FEAR is finally completely stable and *fluid* - ZERO FPS below 25 ... at 14x9 with *everything Maxed & on* [except ss] AND 2xAA/4xAF

i don't think you know anything about this CPU 😛

if you really want to learn something head over to CPU/OC'ing:

Got a Intel Pentium 4 Extreme Edition 3.4GHz 800MHz 2MB S478 CPU

Thanks for the info. Wow, I can't believe the mult is locked! That was always one of the big selling points for the EE series.

Well appoppin in response i can only say, its good to hear you got satisfactory results. I may not be an expert on this particular cpu but i've been building computers for over 20 years and I think i may have just a small clue. I've seen reviews of this processor numerous times and although its a fine processor, its dated. Whether or not to invest money into old technology is the issue. If you have a board with a 478 socket that supports this cpu you may be able to make a case for it. In case you aren't aware of it this cpu utilizes more than 100 watts at idle.

there is NO reason to buy it UNLESS you have a S478 MB and P4 ...
in *that* case, it is usually an excellent upgrade - especially over the hotter-running less efficient Prescott.

*dated*, duh ... but it is the *top* of the P4 'food chain' the ultimate upgrade for your AGP S478MB if the *rest* of you components are capable.

as to power consumption - it is *not* 100w at "idle" ... from your first link😛
The chip has a TDP (Thermal Design Power) rating of 102.9W, close to the thermal power of a 3.2 GHz Prescott CPU, but actually less than a 3.4 GHz Prescott CPU. What this means is that the Extreme Edition sucks up a lot of power, and consequently, produces quite a lot of heat.

While the 3.4GHz EE runs hot, we did not find it to run at such scorching hot levels as Intel's newer Prescott CPU's, which is certainly a good thing.

first of all, it isn't a Prescott ... it is a Gallatin ... a NW core via the xeon server CPU's added +2MB cache ... your second link is broken

you're right ... you don't know much about this particular CPU 😛

Heh! Couldn't agree with you more!

If you'll pardon the pun... in my case... I have three perfectly good S478 mobos... the one I'm using, and two backups.

Like Goldilocks and The Three Bears, the Extreme Edition was too big, the Celeron was too small, but the Northwood was just right! So that's the route I went... 😀

I've been wanting to get one of my backup mobos populated, and upgrade my production machine, but I couldn't bring myself to plop down big bucks for a Prescott... so these mobos languish in my bedroom closet, with clothes I haven't worn in three years... LoL!

Anyway, I was thinking about this, a few months ago...

The joy of owning an EOL machine is... It sure is nice NOT to wonder if Intel is gonna bring out a better S478 CPU in a couple of months -- like I WOULD be wondering, if I bought a C2D. Same goes for the mobos...

Yes, the S478 is history -- the '55 Chevy of CPUs -- but this Extreme Edition chip is gonna be like owning a '55 Chevy with a blown 454 engine, you know? And, there ain't gonna be many of 'us' driving one, is there? 😉

Man, I'm tickled pink!!!

Shhhhhh! Don't tell the egg, but I would have paid $200 for it... 🙂

but this Extreme Edition chip is gonna be like owning a '55 Chevy with a blown 454 engine,

LMAO....exactly, that's why I bought one too. I still have an IC7 system running (actually two), also have an P4C800 Asus S478 still trucking along with an OC'd 3.06.

What I like about this CPU is it's essentially a northwood with an added 2MB cache. By far, the northwood was the best netburst core ever made, IMO. I never cared for the Prescott's at all. I'm excited about getting this CPU!

The newegg price was $98 shipped a few days ago (after fatcash) and compgeeks was about $115 shipped for a couple days previously. $139-ish is just absurd. A better alternative would be eBay.

yeah, they likely have an algorithm that automatically raises the price.

I bit without thinking on the geeks deal. I hope I don't regret it but if anyone can let me know if I will see much improvement for video editing? - thanks!

Mobo - Intel D865PERL with 4 gb of pc3200

Current CPU to be replaced P4 2.8C Northwood 2.8GHz Model BX80532PG2800D

ok i clicked!
Thanks to badthad for helping me out. It would have sucked if my mobo didn't support it.
Man i can't wait...with this baby I can delay my inevitable complete upgrade by at least 4 more months.

GOTTA LOVE AT

GOTTA LOVE AT

NP man, I know what a pain in the ass a complete upgrade is. Stuff like this let's everyone on old hardware make one last stand before facing a total upgrade.

But I still have yet to see the many AT folks who got on the newegg deal for the FX-55:

"My cheap FX-55 overclocked to 2.9Ghz makes mince meat of your 3.4EE"

Sorry, no bragging rights! Never even heard of it...

I don't even care enough about a FX-55 to Google it!

Tell someone you own an Extreme Edition Intel (any Extreme Edition), and yo dah man, guaranteed! 😉

When will people "get it"? Yea, the Athlon is a better CPU, tell us something we don't know.

Nobody here is going out and buying a motherboard, ram, etc. to go with this CPU. We're buying them because WE ALREADY HAVE SYSTEMS TO PLUG THEM IT INTO. Sometimes I just want to pimp-slap people.
