Intel Pentium 4 Extreme Edition 3.4GHz Socket 478 OEM now....$119.99

Hmmm my brother has a 478 laptop that just sits on his desk, wonder if it would overheat if I put this in, its always plugged in so battery life isnt a concern, would be a heck of an upgrade for him.

Yes, all the EE have unlocked multipliers. This CPU was $1000, this is a super HOT deal! 🙂

:sigh:

Ah if this had been a few years ago at this price it would have been great ... taking care of my disabled wife now SERIOUSLY hurts the finances (in the negatives every month) ... so as much as I would love to pick this up as an upgrade, it's a no fly zone ...

But awesome deal nonetheless ...

Crap, there goes Newegg again with their supply/demand tricks, the price is now $119. Glad I nabbed one when I did, $14 is $14.

nope ... not unlocked multi ...

doesn't matter though, the multiplier is SO high - 17 - you only need 223FSB - PC3500 - to get 3.74Ghz which is my last stable OC at slightly over default vcore and excellent temps

the ES is unlocked

My gut reaction was to jump on this one as its so compelling to get a rare chip. In reality this chip eats tons of power. Also if its true that the multipliers are locked then i'd have to question whether or not these are the real deal or just another marketing scam.
Last but not least is the fact that these chips are pretty much maxed out to begin with so there isn't a lot of overhead left to play with. The strenght of this chip is certainly not games and the only other area where any kind of speed would make a big difference is in multimedia apps and i'm fairly sure a d805 would kick the snot out of it with a little tweaking.

awesome! Anyone know how much (what %) faster this would be than my P4 2.6c? Would I notice any significant improvement?

OK, i had a 2.80c o/c'd to 3.31Ghz ... x1950p/512 ... getting 8,000 in 3DMark05

got my P43.4EE up to 3.74Ghz at just over stock vcore ... 222FSB - piece of cake for PC3500 at 1:1 and now getting 9280 in 3DMark05

you guys decide if it was *worth it*

it basically removed the CPU as a botleneck for my x1950p/512MB 😉

i *doesn't* "eat tons of power"

and it's *extra* 2MB L3 cache improves games ... by quite a lot ... it is competitive [now ... o/c'd] with the Athlon FX51/53

FEAR is finally completely stable and *fluid* - ZERO FPS below 25 ... at 14x9 with *everything Maxed & on* [except ss] AND 2xAA/4xAF

i don't think you know anything about this CPU 😛

if you really want to learn something head over to CPU/OC'ing:

Got a Intel Pentium 4 Extreme Edition 3.4GHz 800MHz 2MB S478 CPU

Damn, I got lucky. I placed an order at $119. Then I went back to the newegg link, and they raised the price 10 dollars!

will it work on my old poweredge 400sc server
I haven't found anyone yet at PowerEdgeForums that installed this in a 400SC but it looks like someone is going to try in this thread. I might try on one of my 400SCs that has a Celeron. That was the one that we got for <$100 after they screwed up on the free PDA. 😛

Someone did install a regular P4 3.4G. People are using a 8400/SC420 6 pipe heatsink (W4254) and shroud (T4307) with the upgraded 400SC fan unit used for 3.0G and above processors in the original config (P0676).

It sucks that NE raised the price, yet again, to $129. Inventory was at 98 when this was first posted. It is now down to 50. You can get it cheaper now at geeks.com.

Unbelievable!!! Thanks, bro!

I just snagged one @ $129. That's still a smokin' price! 😀

Correct!

Before you buy one of these, make sure you check your mobo for compatibility...

Luckily, it'll work with my DFI LanParty PRO875P Rev B! 😀

Well appoppin in response i can only say, its good to hear you got satisfactory results. I may not be an expert on this particular cpu but i've been building computers for over 20 years and I think i may have just a small clue. I've seen reviews of this processor numerous times and although its a fine processor, its dated. Whether or not to invest money into old technology is the issue. If you have a board with a 478 socket that supports this cpu you may be able to make a case for it. In case you aren't aware of it this cpu utilizes more than 100 watts at idle.
