Hi guys, great forums.

I'm pretty new to upgrading CPUs as I've never had much disposable income. That said, my p4 1.7ghz computer could seriously need a new upgrade. I'm not sure if it's compatible as the ASUS site evidentally doesn't support my board as it was manufactured specifically for HP.

Here's the nfo from cpu-z:
Model: p4b-la
FSB: 100Mhz
Bus Speed: 400Mhz
L1 Data: 8KBs
L2: 256KBs

I'm concerned about the FSB not being compatible as this is 800Mhz and my board specs show 400Mhz. If it is compatible would the existing heatsink be adequate? Also I believe I only have a 350 Watt PSU installed, but have a 500W available.

EDIT: I don't really use this machine for gaming, just photo/video editing which, you can imagine, is pretty sluggish.
Thanks

That motherboard looks like it was designed for one of the early Northwood cores. I don't think this processor will work at all. If it did, it would be crippled in some way.
The ASUS P4B-LA motherboard is based on a 845 chipset according to this so I believe Legend is correct since they didn't start supporting the 3.4G CPUs until the 865 chipset. :(

You're my new hero here on AT!!!

Sho'nuff!

Like I said, I would have paid 200 bones for this chip, and I wasn't kidding...

Gotta say, however, that I've never seen anything like this in the computer segment!

This is something I would expect in, like, the camera community, where prices go up after EOL!

Adds to the mystique, no? :D

well, i have an intel d865gbf, just bought intel p4 3.4g EE

on intel's site it says they are compatible, i updated bios thru Intel.

i pop in the P4 3.4 and turn on the comp.

everything fires up, except anything plugged into the mobo, so my keyboard, mouse, moniter...etc. all wont work....??

any help would be great

Hmmm... I've got a standard 3.2 GHz P4 in my 400SC. Think i'd see much of a benefit from this? The major difference (besides the 200MHz speed difference) is the cache, right?

Besides benchmarks, if it even ran on your system, the difference would not be that noticable.

I'm happy to see guys enjoying their upgrades but getting one of these chips is nowhere near the upgrade you will experience with a low-end C2D and an ASRock 4CoreDual-VSTA for a combined total of ~$230 from Newegg. And you can keep all your old parts with this upgrade.

I'm tempted by this chip to upgrade my backup rig with a P4 HT 3.06 and 9800 Pro AGP. I always wanted one of these "EE" chips. :)

actually it is ... the 'extra' +2MB L3 cache helps quite a bit if you are a gamer

IF your GPU is modern ... say a x1950p or xt in AGP

as to C2D, you need a MB upgrade ... this is just a simple Remove and Replace ;)

besides ... screw dual core .. quad core and PCIe2 is where it's gonna be :p

--i don't want to waste money on a MB also - complete reinstall of OS and all my apps and a week to tweak my new system just for a "modern" CPU that won't get much more practically - in games - at my resolutions.

STALKER runs flawlessly on my system at 9x14 with Full dynamic lighting
*all sliders Maxed*
EXCEPT:
--AA [1/3 of the way ... i guess 2x or 4x - AF 'maxed']
--Grass density [10% ... way down]
--Lighting Distance [60% ... over 1/2]
--No Shadows on Grass [Sun Shadows are 'ON' - V-synch 'off']

--not at all bad for a AGP system that is well over 3 years old!
Core2Duo would just allow me to run at a higher resolution ... that's about all ... and i would then need a 8800GTS to take advantage of *it* ...
no thank-you!

i sold my P4 2.80c and my total CPU upgrade [tax, shipping] was less than $100 and a 10 minute install

Well, last summer when I did the ASRock mobo and C2D upgrade I didn't have to reinstall the OS or anything else... it was a remarkably easy and rewarding upgrade. Swapped out the mobo and hooked everything up(30-40 minutes but I'm probably more proficient at this than most), watched as Win XP Pro recognized everything, installed chipset drivers in one package, and boom... 50%+ faster framerates in Q4, HL2 and FEAR using the exact same equipment. From a Northwood HT at 3.45GHz to a C2D at 2.13GHz and the C2D simply blew the doors off the Northwood. If you want to kid yourself that your "new" Netburst P4 is anywhere close to a C2D that's on you.

Point is, I don't think any Netburst P4 is any match for the newer C2D's although I'm happy that you're happy with your new/old stuff. :)

P.S. I'm tempted to upgrade my backup rig with one of these chips but it will still be my backup rig after the upgrade. ;)

and next year when you upgrade to quad core so will i :p

when games *require* it

your CPU would be a total *waste* in my rig at 14x9 ... i would then be limited by my x1950p

*this* IS a *Hot Deal* for those of us who simply want to upgrade their NW or Prescott CPU ... with my simple upgrade, i went from 8000 in 3DMark05 to 9280 ... not o/c'ing my GPU at all ... it brought up the bottom and top frame rates in evey game i play by 15-20%

this is ten minutes and less than half the cost of you new ... dead-end system :p
congratulations and ... enjoy!

Please go post your *own* Core2Duo/MB combo Hot Deal thread

that would be a real service

Somebody already posted the $149 E4300 and motherboard thread so I don't think any service would be done with a repost. ;) I saw friday's newspaper ad and it's still going too.

And I used that other board to transition to my current DS3 motherboard with DDR2, and PCI-E videocard or "dead-end system" as you put it. :p

I still think this deal is hot but there are other possible upgrade paths besides this one that are worth considering. ;)

/sigh

one last time ...

*this thread* is about a CPU upgrade in a S478 MB

you are *thread crapping*

it is against the rules[period]

your *alternative" might belong in the CPU/MB thread but not in a CPU thread
--get it?

this is "Hot Deals" .. not fanboy-Video or AMD vs. intel

the people who click on this thread are looking for a CPU hot deal ... not a CPU and a MB deal

i am certain you mean well ... but this *static* does not belong here

thanks for the 'bump'
... please do not reply here about Core2Duo or AMD CPUs

it simply isn't the place for it ;)

I *guess* some ppl (still) don't get it...

Using the car analogy (again)...

I've seen videos where a Honda Civic will beat a Ferrari, yada, yada, yada.

Guess what? I'd rather drive a 'Ferrari'...

That's what this thread is about -- Ferraris for 10-cents on the dollar, not Honda Civics! :D

Anyway, looks like the Intel 3.4 Gallatin EEs are gone at the Egg, however Geeks still has them...

Mine is supposed to be here Monday. Dang!

Wish it would have come Friday. Now I gotta wait for the weekend to play with it...

Oh, well, I don't have a spare PSU anyway (I like to bench-build first) so that'll give me time to round one up.

Any recommendations?

For an old netburse pentium4, it's not worthy, it's just a single core CPU, A dual core Athlon and motheboard combo is about this price and can be easily OCed to 2.8-3.0ghz, huge difference.

But it's still a hot deal.

I've already said I'd like to buy one but somehow that part got ignored. :(

Sorry but I found this hilarious, in that you are talking about dead-end systems about spending money on a S478 CPU and an AGP video card. I know exactly how you rationalize it but it's still funny :)
