Are niches good idea?

I meant "niche" as in it can offer things others can't.

The comparison to DEC seems very off.

Right now though the -AP line offers nothing other than density. It needs more customization to offer more. Like very high memory bandwidth, and better perf/watt compared to -SP chips in the area where its trying to serve.

-AP succeeds Xeon Phi.

It feels to me like density is becoming a bit of an issue with regards to leakage and heat.

Is it possible to take a nice 5nm, 6nm, 7nm product, and space out the transistors more so that the die area and heat dissipation is more ideal?

Intel is already doing it with 14nm
the transistor density is around 1/3 of theoretical for the core cpus

-TechPowerup is using WCCFTech as a source.
-WCCFTech uses Computerbase.de as a source.
-Computerbase.de uses Twitter as a source.

WCCFTech says its from a Chinese tech site.

The funny thing is, *we* could be the English forum that got it first.

I feel Anandtech's review quality in general has degraded, especially after Anand Lai Shimpi left, but perhaps little before that when they started focusing on mobile reviews.

But, one thing I respect them about is they are very careful on leaks.

Whiskey Lake is on 14nm++ and KBL-R is on 14nm+, it's a refresh but not a renaming. The first stepping of Comet Lake-U is a pure renaming of WHL. The second stepping is coming also with 6 cores, so they can't simply rename it.

Oh, I did not know--thank you for the correction. I looked up repoman27's post and there are two CML-U releases! So that's why the first Comet Lake-U stepping won't have LPDDR4 support.

//

This naming will be bewildering for consumers when they launch in August:

  • i7-1065 G7 (Ice Lake)
  • i5-1035 G1 (Ice Lake)
  • i3-1005 G1 (Ice Lake)
  • i7-10710U (Comet Lake)
  • i7-10510U (Comet Lake)
  • i5-10210U (Comet Lake)
  • i3-10110U (Comet Lake)
//

Unfortunately, this trick only goes as far as Comet Lake :D

From the article in case it disappears.

The most important points:
  • Up to 10 cores (mesh?)
  • Socket: LGA 1200
  • TDP: 125W
  • Chipset: 46 PCI-E lanes
  • CPU: 16 PCI-E lanes
The rest was already present in Coffee Lake, so I'm not even sure why it's in the slides. Looks like the 10nm process is far far away yet which really sucks. In 2020 we'll get the 6th(?) reiteration of the Skylake core.

I guess even if Intel releases the Comet Lake platform it will be sold in extremely low volumes if any.
Intel doesn't have enough capacity to release multicore CPUs and these consumer parts will eat into Intel's margins 'cause Xeons are a lot more profitable. In short Comet Lake sounds stupid and short-sighted. It's a lot like AMD's GPUs for the past several years: the company makes sure they have presence in the GPU market however they don't really care about performance/features/volume/TDP/pretty much anything. I'm not trying to troll or hurt anyone's feelings but the first gen Navi GPUs are also a "we are alive" product. For Sony/Microsoft they are preparing Navi with hardware accelerated ray tracing which is not present in this year's Navi.

Spoiler: Rant

There still will be business desktops and gaming laptops which need integrated GPU, for which AMD has not moved APUs to 7 nm yet.

For DIY, might be a brute-force victory with very high power like Radeon RX 590.

I have money for a new rig burning a hole in my pocket. But I simply refuse to buy anything from Intel until Sunny Cove (whenever that may be). All these Skylake iterations are a true sign of desperation in my opinion.

So why not get a 3000 series Ryzen ?

WOW! More Skylake. What else could you ever want?

More Skylake! I would want a reminder of sequence of future Intel processors
Desktop:
2019: Coffee Lake R
2020: Comet Lake
2021: ?

Mobile:
2019: Ice Lake (Sunny Cove)
2020: Tiger Lake (Willow Cove)
2021: Adler Lake (Golden Cove)

I have altered the roadmap, pray I don't alter it any further.

Intel is ramping for 7nm aggressively, don't expect anything to be on solid schedule till 7nm.
