Just had my mother go pick one up for me! Now even after shipping this is going to be a nice upgrade from my E8400 :D

I may just see you there....

my server box is limping along on a e4300. I figure on swapping this in and using Win2008 w/ Hyper V and WHS (vail) as a VM.

Does anyone know if MC is closed today with the holiday? I called, the voice systems says to wait for a rep but noone answers. I'm on my way there now (Cambridge, MA) and hate for the doors to be closed. :(

Is it worth upgrading from a Q6600 for this price? If I could sell the 6600 for most of what this one costs?

I'm at home today because the kids have the day off, but I might go tomorrow to the MA store.

Well I've been battling this for the last few days...and I'm now on the side of passing. I looked at the Anand benchmark comparisons and the e8400 at stock is faster than the Q8300 on almost every test. The only ones that make a big difference are the encode bench and one other. And I don't encode enough to really make it worth taking a hit in the others. My rational side is telling my consumer side to sit tight and wait until next year for a forklift upgrade on the whole system.

thanks for the help guys.

EDIT:

I just picked up two of them.

As of now they have 35 left in stock.

Depends on what youre doing. I'd say the Q8300 is actually much better than the Q6600 as its based on 45nm and is removed from unecessary cache that increases temps. The 8series quads as about 5% faster per clock, despite having half the cache compared to the 6series. If you pair it with a decent P45 chipset, 450fsb is a breeze and a q8300 at 3.4 is as fast as a Q6600 at 3.6 while being much cooler. Some people with the UD3R (or similar) hit 500fsb with a little tweaking. That would be a 3.75ghz quad for a mere $90.

These ballparks are not unrealistic. After seeing some peple get a Q8200 stable at 3.6 with a decent board, the Q8300 should be right in line.

Check what version your PCB is on your motherboard (should be 1.00G or higher). BIOS version 0406 came out in Oct '08, if you bought the motherboard after that, chances are it'll work.

It is 1.00G. I am now torn about whether to get in on this or not. I already have a brand new X2 555 BE and board. So not sure that i need this. Is this mainly for specialty applications like Photoshop? Did games ever catch up to take advantage of quads (other than Far Cry 2)? Can you get a decent C2D for cheaper brand new? If not, it might be worth it just for multi-tasking.

New Egg has this for $71 E6500 Wolfdale Just change the FSB from 1066 to 1333 and you have yourself a fast CPU

yes, most of the newer games can use a quad...
