Micro Center has a B&M-only deal on the retail boxed Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300 for $89.99 plus tax. It is listed in their sale email with an expiration date of 11/12. Both Chicago area stores list more than 20 in stock. Hopefully it isn't a price mistake.

Wow, wish I was near Chicago. Can I give someone money to purchase it for me?

I have a new Asus P5Q SE2 sitting around. It looks like it supports this CPU from the Asus website as of a certain BIOS update. Would anyone be able to tell me if this CPU is supported right out of the box or would it require the BIOS update first?

Check what version your PCB is on your motherboard (should be 1.00G or higher). BIOS version 0406 came out in Oct '08, if you bought the motherboard after that, chances are it'll work.

How come whenever there's this red hot deal it has to be a B&M? And there's not a single store MC Store in the neighborhood of Seattle! Is there?

How well do these overclock?

i have one running @ 3.5... was at 3.3 until i got a p45ud3p... need a board and ram that'll do high fsb... and it's a bit of work to get there, and about all the volts i care to put to one of these... been running that way for almost 2 years now... bought when the great deal was $149 and 3 free games... hope this is still on when i get to dallas saturday...

remember, no virtual on these...

Hour drive each way, or I'd take one.
You must have never lived in a rural area. It's an hour drive for me to any city that has anything more than a Walmart.

I'd be down for one of these also, but the nearest MC is in Chicago which is a bit more than a 3 hour drive from here.

Wow, smoking deal. Debating whether or not I really need this right now though as my E8500 still suits me just fine and maybe I should just wait until next generation...

Sorry to ask for help...but I'm a gonna anyway. I have a P5Q-e with an e8400 (3.0GHz) running fine right now, but I've always wanted to go quad. Would this work and would it be an improvement...in general use and games.??

IMO I would just overclock your e8400 higher, maybe even to 4.0ghz (your RAM and mobo can handle it) and I would save that money for something else. Even on a stock cooler I bet you could push that overclock much higher. Personally I haven't seen any game that can utilize more than 3.8+ and unless you're doing something like video encoding you won't notice the upgrade to quad.

Like what unknown said, in general use and games you probably won't notice the upgrade and it won't be worth it for you.

i'd look at it a little differently... your existing chip is never going going to be worth more than it is today, and the q may never really be cheaper than this... sell your chip and cheap upgrade... if you are still happy with a dc, then a qc @3.3ish should hold you for a long time for cheap...

I live 2-3 miles from our MC .. they have 20+ in stock, not sure what i'd do with one though!

Same here - hot deal, but I recently upgraded my machines to AMD dual/quad cores. The only machine that I could use this for would be my MAME arcade computer, which is running an E4400 @ 2.7 Ghz at the moment.

20+ in stock at my local Denver MC...

Edit: I'm guessing these are probably older ones, which NewEgg had on sale for $112 (but sold out now):

had to bite...even though I'll probably rarely ever use 4 cores [maybe help with Civ 5]. Parents live near a MC and can ship one out. :)

Hmmm, what to do. I have an ASROCK 780G based full-sized ATX board with a black edition Kuma 7750 in it that is 2.7 ghz. stock and can only hit 3.0 ghz. overclocked in my HTPC. I also have a P35 Gigabyte board just sitting here. I'm thinking sell the AMD board+cpu and then use the P35 board with this chip and overclock it. My concern, how much do you think the AMD mobo+cpu would fetch? If not a lot it probably wouldn't even be worth it. If I could get $60 I'd consider it.
