From the same interview as well:

"Later this summer," says (Bob) Swan, "we'll introduce Tiger Lake and cement our position as the undisputed leader in mobile computing and PC innovation."

So the undisputed leader doesn't want people to benchmark their products?

So the undisputed leader doesn't want people to benchmark their products?
So the undisputed leader doesn't want people to [any type of test/evaluation] their [anything]?

This is a consistent line you'll get from anyone who has no backup for their claims, someone who knows their position is built on mindshare rather than fact or evidence or values.

Everything is great, just don't look into it. The best.

Come on guys, Bob is right, benchmarks clearly no long cover what Intel is actually going for:

"We should see this moment as an opportunity to shift our focus as an industry from benchmarks to the benefits and impacts of the technology we create. The pandemic has underscored the need for technology to be purpose-built so it can meet these evolving business and consumer needs.

And this requires a customer-obsessed mindset to stay close, anticipate those needs, and develop solutions. In this mindset, the goal is to ensure we are optimising for a stronger impact that will support and accelerate positive business and societal benefits around the globe.

Someone once did a study of company financial reports and found that when things were bad they used way more long winded or flowery language to obfuscate and draw attention away from the bad result.

This is just one synergistic paradigm realignment away from major disaster.

In many cases, benchmarks are near useless without context. But they're used without context anyway (Geekbench in particular).

Meanwhile if you benchmark games Intel still comes out ahead in many cases, so I'm not sure why they would be against benchmarks in general.

* This is just one synergistic paradigm repositioning relative to previous trajectory expectations that, should it continue in such a way, may constitute a reason for us to consider the possibility that we are witnessing the realization of a pattern that will require realignment of our forward-looking stance on our strategic business goals with respect to our core values and vision.

They're planning ahead. With COVID, you could see many governors and Senators normalizing risky behavior, before reopening the states.
This is similar. Intel see that AMD can, if they keep clocks the same, use N7P or N7+ and unified L3$ to realize 10-15% IPC gains, and since AMD already have the IPC lead, such a gain would push AMD ahead in gaming, while furthering productivity leads in most tasks.
He is not saying this as a response to the current state.
He is saying it in order to pre-emptively normalize the idea that benchmarks are not useful these days, which will be their stance going forward, as they expect AMD to lead in most metrics.

That’s true right now, but what about in a month when the supposed higher clocked XT parts arrive?

Even if those don’t topple Intel what happens when Zen 3 lands either later this year or sometime next year?

Even if we accept that Intel will still hold gaming benchmarks, and it’s possible that they will, there are plenty of other benchmarks that aren’t games. Intel loses those by a much wider margin than they win on games.

Because Laptops (losing), OEM (don't need benchmarks), DC (losing) dwarf sales of enthusiast desktop CPUs (which is the one market they actually lost control).

They have a performance lead in one real market and that is the only market they are really underperforming sales wise. So makes sense they would throw that baby out with the bath water, to prevent eroding sales in the other markets. All by selling the same product over and over again as market specific like the HDD manufacturers.
