I can't speak for BF1942 but this is MUCH, MUCH more realistic than CS:S. If you get shot in this game, you're pretty much dead unless you get very lucky. The game can be frustrating (especially w/ 30s until respawn) but it's an amazing game once you know what you're doing.
 
I've been playing it... so far I actually really really like it. There are a lot of things to be improved, but man it definitely has some real potential.

Why not just call them Terrorists? If they are going to name the "good guys" US Marines in their game why not name the bad guys as they should be also?

At least the Counter-Strike bunch haven't gone PC whacko and named their terrorists "Insurgents".

A terrorist and insurgent are two different things

Terrorist
Insurgent

Just because someone is fighting against the "good guys" in iraq doesn't automatically make them a terrorist
 
I have played this game twice, it is an interesting game. It is a hard game. These members know what they are talking about. There is no radar or crosshair so thats really hard reminds me of 007 for n64 lol. The graphics are amazing though. There are bugs all over. I want to use those tanks and just roll over the other teams to bad they don't do nothing *(.

I really enjoy the game.


However, as a valid aside, it is my opinion that there are numerous aspects of the game that show at least some of the Dev's symapthetic view towards the Iraqi insurgent.



 
I am liking this game more and more as I play it more. I've gotten quite a few times where the game freezes like I lost internet connection, and after a little it says "Warning: Connection problem" or however. My brother who was playing with me at the same time on that server got it to and got booted back to the server browser, so it must be some server crash problem (reminds of the BF2 v1.3 crashes).

So that is annoying, and so is the # of class limits per squads. If they want to be real about it, there should be way more than 1 rifleman, not 2 RPG gunners and 2 support. Basically all the crappy classes that no one wants to play you get stuck with. They need to make a greater # of players be regular old rifleman or slight variants, and make classes like the RPG gunner get an Uzi or other short/stubby rifle or carbine (ala bazooka class in DoD:S), and equip everyone with sidearms for **** sake! It'd be cool to have a greater selection of assault rifles, accessories (various scopes or red dots), as well as binoculars and nightvision. Change them up according to USMC or Insurgents. I know that stuff wouldn't be in the very first beta 1 release, but I hope they continue to do as well as this release is already.
 
the game needs to speed up about 2x. movement is way too slow for an fps game. I don't want it to be like UT or quake, but it should move just as fast as CS:S or DOD:S
and also the class menu reeeeally needs some work. I can hardly understand what class is available, and what kit you get with each class. They need a VGUI menu like in DOD:S
heck, they should aim to make it as close to BF2 as possible, but in the source engine. that would definitely pull me away from BF2.

I'd have to disagree, the game play is perfect imo, aside from bugs
It is supposed to be realistic and tactical not "BF2".

As far as classes, its pretty simple, support = mg, engineer/sapper = shotgun, rest have rifles...

I'm sure a better class selection is coming, with more riflemen, but its functional as it is now.

A lot of people complain about the shotgun/rpg but if you look on the forums plenty of people are really good with these weapons. (I will admit I'm not) so I try to avoid them and let someone else use them, but I think they're decent, and the RPG can be good/fun.

My only real complaints with the game are the map layouts - insurgents get all the good sniping lanes and its really easy on most of the maps as an insurgent to fend off the marines, and that the view port is off from the model so that bullets actually go a bit below where you're aiming.

Bullsh*t, it's plenty fast enough. DOD-S is WAAAAAAAAY too fast to be fun, it's annoying as hell, and a main reason I rarely play DOD-S. BF2 is barely faster than this anyway. A game on the scale of BF2 with these g raphics and this style would be awesome though. I'm thinking FFOW is going to come close
 
I think the movement speed is fine. You seem to be able to sprint continuously anyway. Since they are going for more realistic gameplay, they probably shouldn't have the movement speed as fast as DoD or CS. I get frustrated with highly realistic games too when movement is slow and combat is clunky, but this game pulls it off really well. With only a few hours of playing this under my belt, my final game last night had me at the top of my team for a while, almost 2x the score of the next guy. Then again, I had so many idiots on my team like AFK commanders, no orders, that I had to step up as commander even tho I barely knew WTF to do, but we were capping points and even won a couple of rounds!

I checked out the shooting range as well. And as novasatori said about sniper bullets off, that must be the reason. I couldn't figure out why with the Insurgent sniper rifle (L42A1) that I missed constantly and only got like 1 kill after many shots. At the range I noticed that the bullets dropped quite a bit from where I aimed, so I had to aim a little high as if compensating for bullet drop, but it must be just a bug.

I can't wait for additional releases with new maps, bug fixes, better classes and selection, performance improvements, etc!

I really like the Haditha map the most I think. I heard a lot of people say Almaden is their favorite, but every game I played of that map, I seemed to end up in the same old spots, stuck and unable to move unless I wanted to die, like a stalemate. It is still OK though, as is Baghdad if I can learn that massive map. I played the coalmine map the first time I played, but not too fond of it. Karkar is so-so, probably between Alamden and the coalmine for me.


Does anyone know what the options in the Advanced control menus are all about that are

Track IR
Alternative ironsight
Alternative stance

or something like that? I know Track IR is some piece of hardware used to look around, but the other two options I enabled, except they don't stay enabled as soon as you hit OK on that window.
 
Its actually low for every gun, if you take an m4 you'll see bullets drop below the red dot.

It does happen with others but its much harder to tell with m16 or ak instead of the m4/m14/enfield
 
I d'l'ed it yesterday and like the previous poster noted was on top of the pointys list. Some of it was due to constant team killing on behalf of some morons. We need a punative mechanism like on some CS:S servers. There was one camping idiot at the base with a machine gun killing all his teammates.

- I couldn't find the map view (unless I missed it) - I was wondering around in the wrong spot looking for someone to wack. We live in the 21st century where troops have individual GPS units. Mark your friendly troops on the map to easily trace them.
- I was constanly getting stuck around the corners and trucks.
- I wish the movement speed was more dynamic/fluid like in CS:S. Heavy support troops will have one speed, while light infantry is faster. I also hope that developers won't introduce the 'running with a knife' thing like in CS:S. You are loaded with ammo/guns, how a knife out affects your speed?
- the server needs to have team auto-balance turned on. I saw battles 12 vs 4 people on some maps.
- the insurgents' skins were more easily detectable on sandy maps for me, at least. They stood out like dark spots on the cliff sniping map. That alone made sniping off bad guys an easy job.
 
Anyone install this on Vistax64 yet? Doesn't show up in the programs list and can't find a way to launch it going through the games folders.

Aha- restarted Steam- there it is...
 
correction, we dont all have gps devices, so the no map interface is good, and we all dont carry around radios either, so intercoms between people are non existant, you need to be within yelling distance. we also move slower than insurgents due to the fact that we carry around oh lets see...210 rounds of 5.56mm rounds minimum, and 800 rounds for the m249 gunners. quite a few. the vests we wear, are at least 35lbs additional. the helmet, around 10-15lbs i believe. and then our hydration devices, 3 liters of water. so yeah, we move slower than they do because of all of that stuff. so far, this game seems pretty spot on to me. when i get back, i'll probly end up playing it right away, that is, due to the fact that the wireless internet we have here, sucks and you are completely unable to play any kind of game besides mmorpg's.
 
I guess I'll be the lone voice of dissent and offer that I think this mod sucks as far as entertainment goes. Sure, for an amateurs effort (and I don't use that term as an insult at all) it's very impressive, I find it slow, plodding, and too "realistic" for it's own good. I think the class delineations are shit, who the hell wants to be the sapper (shotgun) on a map based on a desert? And RPG's are used against vehicles where the occupants don't have the ability to react (i.e. waiting for you to pop your stupid little RPG wielding head up just to shoot it off in a micro second). You think anyone in their right mind would be wandering around trying to engage an infantry platoon with an RPG? No, because you have to be very carefully situated just to fire the damn thing (backblast, balance, aim) and that is not very well suited to CCQ fights which this game is pretty much based on. The sniper rifles (as was mentioned) are innacurate. I mean come on, a bullet does not drop 2 feet in less than 100 yards; sorry.

But the fact remains, this game is slow and is just a matter of who pops their out out first and gets it blown off by some unseen adversary. Ooooh, fun!

actually the inaccuracies in guns are not bullet drop but camera being misplaced in relation to the model - its funny you try to relate it to bullet drop, because the farther you're shooting the more accurate it is, the inaccuracy is only really noticeable the closer you're shooting.

there are people who like the shotgun and rpg, but that aside, I'm sure there will be more riflemen etc in the future as this is one of the strongest complaints.
 
Runs fine on Vista X64. You have to load into a server first, so just run a search for an INS server.

IMO the game is awesome. It takes some getting used to, but it's a lot of fun. Once you've mastered the movements and formed a good team the USMC can pretty much take on any map with ease. It really is based on teamwork. Marines move slower, but the weapons make up for it.

Yeah but you guys ( thanks btw ) are not losing to the insurgents in head to head battles. In this mod the insurgents win around 70% of the time at least. Their increased speed is not offset by the added advantages our guys possess
