Insiders Hinting at a Miers Withdrawl.

The White House has begun making contingency plans for the withdrawal of Harriet Miers as President Bush's choice to fill a seat on the Supreme Court, conservative sources said yesterday.
"White House senior staff are starting to ask outside people, saying, 'We're not discussing pulling out her nomination, but if we were to, do you have any advice as to how we should do it?' " a conservative Republican with ties to the White House told The Washington Times.
A second Republican, who is the leader of a conservative interest group and has ties to the White House, confirmed that calls are being made to a select group of conservative activists who are not employed by the government.
"The political people in the White House are very worried about how she will do in the hearings," the second conservative leader said. "I think they have finally awakened."

It would be nice if she does go away and he picks someone he isn't closely linked to. The mix between her close links to Dubya and her lack of credentials really made her such a bad choice.

I like to look at it from the other angle the damage I know it is doing to the republicians vs. the damage I don't see. If he does withdraw her the longer he waits the better. At this point it wouldn't be until late janurary for the conformation hearings for a new judge. If bush went with some one with a consiritive (anti abortion) judge the conserivites in congress would get slaughter in the elections just months away.

Personally, I don't care much but I would just as soon get this over with and back to more important issues. It would be funny to see her confirmed with more Democrat support than the GOP however. With Bush, you got what you voted for...hehe! :laugh:

How about this for advice"

The President should step up to the podium and make the following announcement:

"In an act typical of the continued incompetence of my Adminstration, I nominated to the Supreme court Harriet Miers. She's a wonderfully nice lady, and that and the fact that she one of my very good friends constitute her qualifications for the job. That may not sound like much, but with all this talk of this or that interest group not being represented, I thought, isn't it time that STUPID people be given a voice on the Court?

I hope not, the Miers situation is a source of great personal entertainment. Some conservatives are pissed because she's not a fundy nutjob, others are joined by liberals in being pissed that she's not even slightly qualified, many people overall are pissed that it looks like more Bush cronyism, and Bush seems confounded that the right didn't ask "how high" when he said jump.

Seriously though, I kind of hope she gets replaced while at the same time I kind of don't. Part of me wants a person who's qualified for the position, and not another buddy of Bush's (they seem to have a dangerously high amount of stupid). But part of me was surprised that Bush nomiated someone like Roberts the first time around, and that part of me was surprised again by the seemingly non-wacko politics and judicial outlook of Miers. I didn't think Bush had two of those nominations in him, and I'm afraid that our limit is up, and his next pick will be someone more in line with the values and wishes of his base. Someone like Darth Vader, for example.
