Inlaws pissed cause I wont help loser brother in law

Here's what I do in those situations- do what everyone wants you to. Then, if you stuff comes back ruined, take it over to your inlaws, show him what your brother-out-law did to your stuff, and blame them.

Make them feel so guilty they either buy you new stuff or never ask you to do anything again. You end up as being the correct, level headed one, you still get to have sex, and you don't have to do anymore favors.

People like that won't feel guilty. Instead, they'll blame it on something else -- you for "not keeping the equipment in shape," the weather, job site obstacles, etc. Trust me -- enablers like the OP's in-laws never run out of excuses.

What's the point? Tell the BIL no. The OP made it clear in his OP that in the past, he does go and supervise the BIL when his equipment is involved but it gets old really fast and this was a last-minute "request."

He didn't see any problem with his son taking out about $75k worth of equipment for on the job training on commercial property with a history of trashing everything with no ability to pay for any fixes/when he breaks something.

This says everything right there. Fuck 'em. I'm sure there's some sort of operator licensing requirement to utilize heavy equipment like that for any paid job. Tell them you're not sticking out your neck, equipment, liability and insurance credit for your BIL's job-of-the-day paycheck.

You definitely made the right choice. It may not force him to recognize his failings, but at the least you won't be faced with a lawsuit when he hurts himself/someone else, or damages property when trying to operatre equipment he has no clue how to use.

I own and operate a fleet of about 60 pieces of heavy equipment and operating them comes with a large degree of responsibility.

Nearly flipped the machine and I would have shot out of the cab in front of the machine if I hadn't been wearing my seat belt at the time. My neck felt that for a few days.
