Here's what I do in those situations- do what everyone wants you to. Then, if you stuff comes back ruined, take it over to your inlaws, show him what your brother-out-law did to your stuff, and blame them.

Make them feel so guilty they either buy you new stuff or never ask you to do anything again. You end up as being the correct, level headed one, you still get to have sex, and you don't have to do anymore favors.

People like that won't feel guilty. Instead, they'll blame it on something else -- you for "not keeping the equipment in shape," the weather, job site obstacles, etc. Trust me -- enablers like the OP's in-laws never run out of excuses.

Let him borrow it on the condition you can supervise?

What's the point? Tell the BIL no. The OP made it clear in his OP that in the past, he does go and supervise the BIL when his equipment is involved but it gets old really fast and this was a last-minute "request."

He didn't see any problem with his son taking out about $75k worth of equipment for on the job training on commercial property with a history of trashing everything with no ability to pay for any fixes/when he breaks something.

This says everything right there. Fuck 'em. I'm sure there's some sort of operator licensing requirement to utilize heavy equipment like that for any paid job. Tell them you're not sticking out your neck, equipment, liability and insurance credit for your BIL's job-of-the-day paycheck.

Family can be such assholes.

One time, my mother in law badly needed $400 for rent and came crying to us. We knew she had a nearly brand new snow blower she had purchased 18 months ago and used twice. Now that she was in an apartment, it just took up space in her garage.

We offered to buy it for $400. First she bitched and moaned but eventually relented.
pwned! Those damn things are expensive around here.

That works great for $50 items but his comrade is asking about borrowing thousand dollar equipment and potentially smash it into some guy's BMW. Let him fuck up a radio or something, but put your foot down when it's expensive stuff like this.

Epic thread, OP! I'm relieved for you that your wife is on your side, your BIL is spoiled trash.

You definitely made the right choice. It may not force him to recognize his failings, but at the least you won't be faced with a lawsuit when he hurts himself/someone else, or damages property when trying to operatre equipment he has no clue how to use.

I own and operate a fleet of about 60 pieces of heavy equipment and operating them comes with a large degree of responsibility.

Indeed. Until you've caught a casting or curb at speed, you have not seen the mayhem that can follow.

Shit, that reminds me of the time I caught a casting with the front bucket of a bobcat skidsteer at full tilt when snow clearing. Nearly flipped the machine and I would have shot out of the cab in front of the machine if I hadn't been wearing my seat belt at the time. My neck felt that for a few days.

I've taken my worst hits that way, poorly paved areas or one lift of paving left to do. Some other azzhole buries the high casting then you come along and "find" it.

Lol at "supervise him" - you would basically just be another witness when something goes wrong. Shit goes wrong fast with construction equipment. When father-in-law complains, explain "my insurance won't cover inexperienced operators. If he hits another car, if he hits a telephone pole, if he hits a person - shit is going to get bad realllllly fast, because they will investigate and there will be lawsuits. I can't take that risk. "

So right and to "supervise him" he would be there the whole time.... may as well do it himself with "HIS" equipment and make all the money.

OP keep that girl and run as fast as you can away from the problem;)

That works. But so does dumb slut, bimbo, etc.

"Slut" "bimbo" and the like doesn't imply that the BIL fathered a child out of wedlock that he's not supporting. That's what "baby momma" means: he fathered a child with the girl and he's not supporting either of them.

Threads like this make me EXTREMELY happy I broke up with her ex. Her family is a consistent financial cluster fuck.

Wrong, just say "Sorry but the answer is no" There's no need to explain. You were asked and you answered. End of story.

hm.. instead of 'F you'

interesting.. saves you the time and energy to explain. just no, then hang up the phone. click

nice.......
