Indonesian railway stringing concrete balls to deter roof riders

So whats stopping the Indonesian gov't/railway company from putting out more trains, looks like there is a demand for it. Is the fare prohibitive, thus the free ride?

My brother travelled around the world with his first wife many years ago. Sometimes they went cheap, sometimes they splurged a little.

They were to ride a train in some place like India, I believe (could have been any country in that region). When they were buying their ticket, they were asked if, for an extra 50 cents, they wanted a berth "with an electric fan". Given the hot conditions, it seemed like a small price to pay, so they paid the extra $0.50.

They made their way to the berth and noticed the smallish fan in an upper corner of the berth. My brother reached up, flipped the switch and... nothing. He flipped the switch again... nothing. After a few more tries, he gave up, sat down and turned to his wife and said,

"I wonder how much extra it would have been for a working electric fan."

Lets have a little comparison here.

In Indonesia they are going to hang cement balls from chains in an effort to keep, or knock off, roof riders on their trains.

In the US we put water fountains in the desert and escape ladders in the levees to climb out of the water they intentionally enter (These are just a few of the things we do.) so illegal immigrants can survive their trip to America. Oh, and then we let them get drivers licenses, welfare, and college educations through the Dream Act, followed by citizenship.

The train riders just want to get from point "A" to point "B" at their own risk, and it's already a death trap.

It is the sheer numbers. And it is compounded by their legal system and the size of facilities. Then add in things like the local citizens don't really see this as a crime or any sort of theft. The mentality is you are paying to sit inside, not to ride the train.

Try to arrest 1000 people. Then the next train is in 30 minutes, and arrest another 1000, and another, you get the idea, then add in the mix of people running, with the normal crowd that paid for tickets. Trying to arrest and process the free loaders will take way too much man power, not to mention how would you transport, feed, house them in the process, as the police stations are only going to hold a few hundred at the most. Poverty in these areas is a new level. I would rather be a homeless man in the US, than a poor person in Indonesia (or two thirds of the world for that matter).
 
Shields at maximum. This solutions seem to be a bit ruthless though, it can easily kill someone... In US, ALCU would already have multiple lawsuits against Amtrak by now on grounds of racism.
 
LOL! Sure, huge concrete balls to slam into people on the roof aren't meant to cause harm.

He said that the move was intended to provide safety and comfort to passengers and not to cause harm.

Rail capacity is limited by a few things. The speed of the trains is limited by the quality of the track and how tight the curves are. The length of the train doesn't seem to have any limit; freight trains can be over a mile long. An important one is how close together the trains can be and how fast they can be going when they are a certain distance apart. This comes down to what type of signalling system the train uses. Since we're talking about a ghetto country, I'm guessing their signalling system is horrible and it restricts them to running trains that are either spaced far apart or they are very slow.

One or two direction tracks:
On a road you normally see lanes dedicated to each direction. 2 car lanes = 1 lane in each direction. Some trains are like that. If the trains are driven like one would drive a car (just 1 guy and some controls) and there's a lack of intelligence in the system, then the safest bet is to have a specific direction for each track. This is probably what ghetto countries do. In more advanced systems like the subway system in a first world country, both tracks have trains going in both directions. When the system sees trains are going to hit each other, one of the trains will be diverted to the other track or onto a passing loop.

Communication with other trains:
Are the trains communicating in some way? Are the trains talking to each other or is there a central station somewhere to coordinate it? The most basic communication would be guys talking on CB radios the way truckers do.
The less communication there is, the slower the trains need to go, and the farther apart they need to be. Safety first (especially when you're on top of the train, not held on by anything).

centralized train control:
This is one step above CB radios. The train sends signals to a centralized station where humans coordinate what is going on. A guy sitting in front of a computer screen sees where all the trains are tells people what to do. Train A goes this way, train B slow down, etc. CTC is much more efficient than having no system at all, and it's also a lot more expensive. Think of CTC as being like a major airport, but with trains.

positive train control:
Imagine your car automatically stops at red lights and it doesn't let you hit the gas until the light turns green. That's positive train control. While the driver can still do things and control the train, certain things say "no you can't do that" and it allows trains to be just a bit more balls to the wall while still maintaining safety. PTC is extremely expensive.


Upgrading the system is very expensive. You can't just add more trains or make them go faster. You need better communication. A shit train system is just guys with walkie talkies. A better system is old style trains with radios but the track itself is intelligent and has a centralized controller. A step above that is intelligence in the train itself. You'll find the top quality trains in places like Japan. The trains go 100mph and they're really damn close together. Shitty ones in India might go 20mph and they're still spaced far apart because that's the only way to be safe with such shitty communication.
 
Looking at the picture in that article they need more capacity. Maybe move to 2 level trains? That would make it harder to climb onto too.

Here in massachuetts typical hacks chose concete back in the 90s and we tax payers are stuck paying $90 million to fix concrete tracks that are failing with wooden ties.
 
Just electrify the entire top. Make the thing like a big capacitor so everyone INSIDE is safe but those touching the outside would be stir fry fly!

Fuck the leeches, they'd stop that shit in a hurry.

They could also have things like automatic car washers they go through using 1000+ psi super heated water. Cleans off everything.

The ACLU should be strapped to the roof when the train is undergoing speed tests. WTF do criminals get guaranteed safe condition in which to steal? Don't want to get hit in the head with a ball? Either stay home or pay for a ticket, your choice.

It's worth noting that the line is not up there to kill people. It's for safety reasons. You don't want to run a shitload of electricity through some tracks on ground level, so it's put above the train where nobody would touch it :awe:

They just want to get to work. I've been on some pretty crowded buses, but imagine a city where every single bus is crowded like that and the only spot left is the bumper and you need to get to work. You stand on the bumper and hope for the best.
