in my opinion, the reason for the relative failure to prepare for the games is entirely top down, due to corruption and mismanagement, and not at all bottom up, as in laziness or lack of knowledge on the workers' part. my $0.02.

also, everyone washes their ass at some point, right? pretty nasty if you don't.

Pretty much hit the nail on the head. Non private construction in India has a "That'll do" attitude with everything. If its good enough, its ok. Nothing is perfect.

You'll see tons of things broken/improperly placed with construction there thats not done for the private sector. Yeah the labor is largely unskilled and uses crude tools, but there are usually skilled craftsmen mixed in with the rest that know somewhat what they're doing.

I'm not going to make excuses for the shit they do, because most of it is true. Westernized Indians (like meeeee) are just as pissed off/embarrassed as most of you guys are when we heard about this. If anything, it just pushes public perception of India down the shitter (figuratively) for another few years.

Also, the brown/red stains on the sinks/bathroom aren't from workers defecating, its an Indian version of spitting tobacco. A lot of the lower classes chew this stuff relentlessly and just spit it out whenever they please.

Thanks, that accounts for some of the stains. But what about the big globs of poop in some pictures and the pictures of kids doing it right where they are being forced to work?

They do that all the time. You know of an interesting statistic, there are more cell phones in India than bathrooms. Lack of proper sanitation is a major issue.. there are a few organizations that help educate people but its a futile attempt IMO.

With such huge populations and lack of personal sanitation(mostly poor people, which account for 45% of the total population) things get pretty nasty.. very fast.

On a positive note, everything going on well, everything was cleaned up and games are proceeding as planned. The opening ceremony was a big hit!

Apparently you missed the part where the boxing scales were calibrated incorrectly for the start of the very first event delaying the start of play.

India lives up to its standards yet again...

It is a common error.. and it happened previously in many occasions according to a commentator.

Faulty weighing scales. We've all been there. Well, Delhi 2010 is not immune... the official weigh-in for the Game's boxing competition has been put back until Tuesday after complaints they were faulty. Australia especially concerned. "They [our boxers] went to the sauna trying to lose weight and when they came back, weighed more than the last reading," said spokesman John Gatfield. Whoops.

Uhh, actually it is a true story. And it was from here in San Antonio. There is a massive amount of employee's hired at USAA here that are from India. I am not joking. Anyhow, turns out one guy living in the neighborhood had family back home from a rural part of india. He saved up enough money to bring them over to the states to live with him. So there was now a 3 bedroom house with 7 people in it. Not the worst considering some of what I've seen around here, but bad enough. Well one day the family he brought over decide to use the grill out back to do some cooking. They didn't know what the charcoal bag was for so they took some dried poop and started cooking with it. I can only assume it was human poop because they didn't have a dog and there were no cows allowed in the neighborhood.

Bullshit again. You're already backpedaling that it was human feces, and it is absolutely NOT practiced by a "significant number of people" as you previously indicated that human feces are used in cooking in India.

What I stated with my original post, in a sarcastic manner, is that India as a whole is brought down in standards by their poverty, corruption, and filth. Not that everyone there is in that those categories, but enough of the population is. Yes there is a segment of people in most countries that still fit into these categories. The difference is in percentages.

Really? What kinds of percentages are we talking about here Humbliepie? Once again, share with us the sample size and personal experience you are drawing from. Because from you've shared the sum total you have amounts to "having Indian friends", knowing a guy in your neighborhood whose relatives used shit-smelling fuel to cook with, and watching slumdog millionaire.

Patently false quote. No where in this thread did I say it was a "significant number of people." So stop right there you liar. But to further rub your nose in the shit...

Uhh.... because not only is it practiced by some rurals, it is actually becoming a business? Admittedly, the way they are doing it in the link below is not nearly as nasty.

http://money.cnn.com/2008/02/26/news/international/kahn_biogas.fortune/index.htm

Here's other links with regards to cow excrement for fuel in India.

http://climateprogress.org/2010/09/...romote-clean-cooking-in-developing-countries/

This one talks about about them using cow urine for bleach and acne treatment.

http://www.turtlehill.org/india/india2/dung.html

I am not backpedaling I was giving an out because I didn't witness the type of feces they had tried to cook with. There is no cows running around neighborhoods here in San Antonio. They could have driven out to Hondo or some ranch like smaller town nearby San Antonio and picked up cow paddies for fuel. The only logical choice for the feces type used in the story I related in greater detail was of the human variety. If one rural India family was cooking with it without thought, I think it's a bit more wide spread than you are trying to cover up.

Do I look like an India anthropologist to you with demographics upon hand to produce on your command? Again, there is a LARGE segment of Indians here in San Antonio. Many are hired at USAA. Look it up. There are more here for other work as well. Anyhow, many, like yourself, that come from the bigger towns and rarely saw the rural side of India can't believe half of the stuff they've heard about from other Indians who HAVE lived there. No, I've not lived in India. My sources of info come from first hand accounts, news stories, documentaries, and other sources of info. I don't need to go to India to know what goes on there. Trying to ride that high horse is an intellectual fallacy there bud. But I'm not claiming to be the source of that info either.
