funny how these aliens have all this power to travel across the galaxy and technology far far beyond what we have today, yet Jeff Goldblum was able to plant a virus on the "mother ship" with an old laptop and was able take them all down thanks to a ship that crash landed on earth 20-years ago and even more amazing how the aliens didn't notice it was an old/retired ship.

everything is always just perfect in movies.

You missed one important thing he used an Apple not just any ordinary laptop.

Roland Emmerich... is he the guy who has a genocide fetish who did 2012 and Day After Tomorrow?

Or is that the video game movie guy?

cost of a movie is $10+, add popcorn and a drink, your close to $20. when hollywood decides to mass produce crap movies, it pisses me off that i wasted that money to see such nonsense.

seems like every movie that comes out lately is total crap.

Read the reviews first, and don't go if you don't like it.

The rest of us will enjoy a mindless night out.

LOL, so true.

I remember watching it when it came out; those were the dial-up internet days and at times, we would not be able to connect despite all green signals : ie, the login/password is fine, the phone line works, the AOL servers are up and running - yet we would not be able to connect. So when Goldblum planted a virus on an alien space saucer with no visible connectivity and no idea what sort of OS it had, I actually laughed out aloud in the theater and my new bride had to shush me.

But Will Smith was real funny there; I still can't watch the scene of him dragging the knocked-out alien across the desert without laughing.

I still remember Apple running ads which tied in with ID4:

Oh, and to you guys whining about Goldblum's laptop having no 'connectivity' -- I am pretty sure it is shown wired into the system. If you watch him in the saucer, you see lots of wires coming out of the back of the laptop. Also, in the scene where he demonstrates that he can shut down their shields, I thought it showed the laptop wired there too.

I'll check these films out.

On a semi-related note, who else liked 2005's War of the Worlds? Dakota Fanning was annoying as always, but I thought it portrayed a really chilling, fairly realistic vibe of the sheer terror something like that would create. I dug it, or at least most of it.

I love Roland Emmerich movies... Yes, even 2012

Why? Because they are a visual feast, and I love apocalyptic themes (he always seems to pick massive catastrophes or whatever for his movies)

The plot will suck, but since when did alien movies have a plot?
Who is taking the main role though? Will Will Smith be back? (that sounded weird)

Or you could use an explanation that is improbable. You know, just like some events in real human history. ;) Jeff was a super genius savant, and that is why he cracked the signal and determined it was cycling down in the first place. Hell, he even figured out what their plan was.

As to the issues with the ship and uploading the virus: Perhaps the aliens suffer from hubris and incompetence even more than we do. Since their tech is organic in nature, maybe they are basically an idiocracy. So, when shit goes bad, they have no ability to alter strategy and tactics. The established invasion doctrine could have been in place for 1000 of years, and they merely follow it. Or it could be genetic like real locusts. Once Jeff jury rigged a way to interface with their tech, it could have been a completely unsecured environment. So everything connected is vulnerable to malicious code.

I can keep going. But, the whole point is to suspend disbelief and roll with it. If you have to critically evaluate everything you watch, then your idea of fun ain't mine.

Aliens come back with a fully patched network security device and changed complex passwords. Our demise is imminent.
