Going on a long journey I like to save as much gas as I can. I've been putting the car into neutral when coasting or going down a fairly long descent to save as much gas as possible.

I expect I save about a gallon a month doing this.

It's an MT, BTW.

Unlikely. When you shift back, the tranny won't automatically go back into overdrive & locked TCC. Unless you commute from the top of Mt. Washington.

Could just panhandle for 20 minutes a month, scare up the $2.50 for a gallon of gas and skip the coasting :)

Whatever are you on about. ;)

/yourself for deliberately starting this thread, because I know none of the armchair mechanics will read the logic and know that you're trolling.

Please edit title to "I'm wasting gas" kthx :p

No. My foot isn't on the gas pedal.

engine is still revving all the time, is it not? like when a car is in park (AT), its still revving at 1-2k rpm. or are MT's THAT much different?

Then what's firing the combustion?

There isn't any. My foot is off the gas and the car is in neutral.

a combustion engine fires constantly if it is on. go back to grade school.

If you leave it in gear, doesn't the engine just not pull in as much fuel? Yes, it will pull enough to keep going, that's a given. But if you just let off the gas, it's not putting any more fuel into the engine than is required to keep it spinning. If it was putting additional fuel into the engine, your car would speed up, and not coast.

I would be intrigued to know of this perpetual motion device you have constructed.
According to that, a car parked running in a garage should be perfectly safe.
But they're not. They produce exhaust, which can kill people. Exhaust is a product of combustion. The car burns gas even when just sitting there - it does need to burn fuel to keep the engine running.
Duh.

Interesting point. Especially judging by the brevity of the replies, such as "No. I'm saving gas," and the lack of rational argument, this could just be like someone digging up an ant nest and laughing as they scramble all over the place.

Also I bet the OP doesn't know but if you use engine braking, the ECU will adjust to using the same amount of fuel as when it's idle. I think the safest route would be to shift into a gear with the lowest resistance for the best mileage assuming of course you want to coast as far as possible since engine braking does just that, BRAKE and therefore slow you down...
