I'm saving gas

Most engines have some form of fuel cut off when you let off the gas. It won't make a difference if you let your foot off the gas peddle or put the car in neutral.

as long as the engine is firing, you're still burning gas

No. My foot isn't on the gas pedal.

Then what's firing the combustion?

There isn't any. My foot is off the gas and the car is in neutral.

a combustion engine fires constantly if it is on. go back to grade school.

No. I'm saving gas.

I am intrigued by your ideas please add me to your monthly newsletter mailing list.

Also I bet the OP doesn't know but if you use engine braking, the ECU will adjust to using the same amount of fuel as when it's idle. I think the safest route would be to shift into a gear with the lowest resistance for the best mileage assuming of course you want to coast as far as possible since engine braking does just that, BRAKE and therefore slow you down...

Really? That IS interesting.

Coasting downhill is not going to save you any fuel whatsoever. When coasting in gear you are using zero gas anyway. Coasting in neutral you are actually using fuel to keep the engine at idle.

No. If I coast in gear the engine will turn and I will lose fuel. 🙁

i drive an audi with a trip display, when i coast downhill in neutral it says i'm getting 200 mpg.. if i leave it in 5th (last) gear i get the normal ~25 mpg

Here, take an electric motor, hook it up to a battery, what does it do?

Now, take a dewalt or some other power tool, clasp the end to the spinning part on the electric motor, grasp one hand, yell to your mother from your basement to get her ass down there, tell her to get a multimeter and attach the electrodes to the wires coming out of the multimeter.

What happens?
