No. If I coast in gear the engine will turn and I will lose fuel. :(

Here, take an electric motor, hook it up to a battery, what does it do?

Now, take a dewalt or some other power tool, clasp the end to the spinning part on the electric motor, grasp one hand, yell to your mother from your basement to get her ass down there, tell her to get a multimeter and attach the electrodes to the wires coming out of the multimeter.

What happens?

His mother's dead, jackhole! :|

No. My foot isn't on the gas pedal.

Then what's firing the combustion?

There isn't any. My foot is off the gas and the car is in neutral.

a combustion engine fires constantly if it is on. go back to grade school.

No. I'm saving gas.

If you honestly believe that, your an idiot.

An idiot with more gas money than you.

OP its been proven time and time again that doing this will consume more fuel than staying in gear.

I have tested it myself years ago when i had a stick and since i live in colorado i have lots of places where i can just coast in neutral. it doesnt work but go ahead and try it yourself.

Look, when you let off of the accelerator pedal in gear the ECU cuts fuel and the engine is spun by the momentum of the wheels. When you are in neutral the engine is not attached to the wheels so the ECU has to keep a constant flow of fuel to allow the engine to idle.

Incase you didn't get it let me spell it out: WHEN THE ENGINE IS IDLING IT IS USING GASOLINE.

Why do you think that you get better gas mileage on the highway as opposed to in the city? Because in the city you are constantly stopping and the engine is using gas while you are not moving.

I actually considered doing that once, but thankfully I knew that the brakes only work 3 times before the pedal locksup and doesn't function.

Even better:

Cut the floorboard out. It needs to be a big enough hole so you can place your feet on the asphault surface below. Place your transmission in neutral; turn off engine.

Pat your feet and pedal on the ground like Fred Flinstone and take your ass back to the stoneages!

I'd give hims a $50 BP gas card if he runs over Filipino Manjuice

My car idles when it is at a stop. It's not moving, so no fuel is used. If I do that while the car body is moving I save money BIG TIME.

Or be really creative by taking out the engine and tranny and welding a bicyle to the frame of the car. Hop in the seat and you're good to go!

Yeah, this is the best way to save fuel. No question. In fact, take the key out of the ignition and go around a sharp turn on a cliff. This works best to save gas.

This is illegal for the main reason that if your car stalls (it is more likely to stall at idle) you lose power steering and power brakes.

Some people are even more stupid and suggest shutting the car off when coasting, ensuring that they lose power steering and power breaks.

Both are bad ideas.

go let your car idle in your driveway all day and see how much gas you have left.

better yet, do it in the garage with all the doors and windows closed.
