I'm making $1/hour less after 5 years of service than people who just hired in.

The fact that you actually do any work is beyond me.

If I were you I would do next to nothing and see how far I could push it while still keeping my job.

The [in]famous Simpson quote:
"You don't strike, you just go to work everyday and do your job real half-ass.
That's the American way!"

quit and then apply for the job.

fixed

:D

LOL,. I would look for another job, and if you find something good, pitch it to them that you have a better "offer". If the company realllly needs you wait for them to counter it, if not, screw it, its a win-win situation from there.

danny~!

Why should they give you a raise?

quit no doubt about it. if you really like it there you can quit and reapply but i say you move on since you are not appreciated and you have no future there as it is

Annual review time is around the corner and I'm going to be given the paltry 3% raise that still will not bring me to the level of the new employees.

Any suggestions on what I can do about this?

You know exactly what you need to do man. Start looking for another job, doesn't sound like this place is good for you anyway. You're in control of your life not the company. If you feel like they aren't getting what you deserve then find a company that will.

This is the New American Business Model.
You need to gradually reduce your effort, look for new opportunities, and then when you've been offered a new job, take it. Forget the two week notice, too. Make sure you're zeroed out on your PTO / Sick Leave Vacation pay. If you give two weeks notice, they'll make you train your replacement, who will be making more money than you, BTW.
Screw them and anyone who believes this is a reasonable way to reward your five years of diligent service.

The only good reason for two weeks notice is if you genuinely like your coworkers. It's pretty rude to them, on a personal level, if you dump your sh!t in their lap and leave them to sort it out. Now if you could punish the management somehow rather than your coworker friends by quitting on Friday afternoon, then go for it!

unfortunately this happens time and time again. the new hires get paid more than those who have been there and are dedicated to the company.

i would say it's time for a new job.

Tell them you're quitting, and likely they'll come off the money. Place I used to work at was just like that.....you could ask for raises and never get them, but as soon as someone gave their notice, they'd start offering more money....even to the crappy ones.

I dont see the issue.

The management doesnt care about you. You want more money - actually it sounds like you would be complacent given a 1$ raise and that honestly you likely deserve more but dont most of us really work harder than our pay checks can attest to?

The truth is that there is probably nothing you can do about it. You can quit and go work for another company but in the end overall labor costs are decreasing (read raising labor spending due only to inflation), manufacturing costs are decreasing, in many cases profit is on the rise, and still you cannot expect a fair wage.

I vote postal.
