I'm making $1/hour less after 5 years of service than people who just hired in.

It's killing me! Eating me up inside, affecting my job performance, and making me want to go postal! I'm a great employee, I have above average stats (read: micromanaged) that means I do more than my fair share of work and am rarely late or absent. I've been denied promotions because of policy change for 2 years now. We have tests that when passed give a raise... THEY WONT LET ME TAKE THE FLIPPING TEST!!!

Annual review time is around the corner and I'm going to be given the paltry 3% raise that still will not bring me to the level of the new employees.

Any suggestions on what I can do about this?

Their plan is working. You're doing more work for less money and you won't leave.

Why should they give you a raise?

Bingo....obvioulsy the company does not place your contribution as high as you do. If you were as mission critical as you think you are then we would not be having this conversation. If they can get by paying you less and getting more from you then they will continue to do so. Have you spoken to any of your bosses about this issue? If you ask for a raise and do not get it then you know how much the company values you and you should probably start updating your resume.

Live up to your name. Go raise hell with them about it. Obviously they don't value you very much as an employee. Tell them you want 10-15% more than new hires, or you are leaving.

You only have yourself to blame. Your not much of a man, right?

5 years and all you have to show for yourself is whining on a forum.

Go look for another job. RECOGNIZE!

I was in a similar situation. No raise in sight so I put in my two week notice, they reduced my hours by about 30% the next day. It made me so mad that I just walked out that same day. It's commonplace now for employers to do that, at least around here. That's why I'm going to start my own business in a few years.

Sh*t you are right... I've been worried about walking in and asking but why should I be? They are short on emps and I am pretty much the highest producer. They honestly cannot afford to lose me right now. I need to get in there and tell them, its not like they are going to ask me if I want a raise. If they won't give it I'll have my notice in hand ready to toss in their face.

I had this problem...

I got hired in October 2003... January 2004 the starting wages went up... I had to work 1 year and a half making less money than the new, uncertified, no experience employees that just started...

Then I got my raise... now I could care less... :D :D :D

no need to insult the man

just tell them that you want a raise to put you above the n00bs in pay when you do your review. if they don't give you a timeline and stick to it, then start job hunting

good luck you crazybofo

They will pay you less if they can get away with it.

You have to be business smart also and ask for a raise. If they say no you can look elsewhere. Why would a company pay you more then you are already happy with? They save £££ and they have you work for them.

And WTF you have been with them for 5yrs and you haven't done anything else about your 3% yearly raise?! After at least a year I would have been asking for more or at least looked elsewhere that offered a good deal (location, £££, hrs, social life, etc). But 5yrs is a long time man! You have 5yrs experience and it shouldn't be too hard to get another job.

Good luck
