I wouldn't live in Chicago due to the weather. An NYC winter is doable, Chicago is not. If I had to move to Chicago for work I'd move out as fast as possible.

For the most part, it isn't a matter of red/green whatever. It's just the chemical and biological tools available to probe these systems via fluorescence happen to be those colors. It's basically impossible to specifically follow a set of proteins in a cell with visible light microscopy, hence fluorescent tags attached to specific proteins are used to study specific activity in vivo.
