So, I'm leaving work yesterday on my mountain bike. With all the new construction and whatnot here, there's only one entry/exit point to the CDC campus and it happens to be relatively far out of my way.
For whatever reason (I'd find out later), they had one of the side gates open. Since I was on my bike, I figured I'd nip out that way and save myself a few minutes.
Diagram of situation.
The main entrance/exit is way over to the left off the map.
I ride up the side road and am maybe 6 feet away from leaving the campus when one of our illustrious Rent-A-Cops steps in front of me and says "I'm sorry sir, but you can't go this way."
Me: Okay, I didn't know. I won't come this way again tomorrow, but I'm almost off the campus now.
Him: This is controlled access, you can't go this way.
Me: Right, but I already did. 😕
Him: Sir, you're going to need to turn around. This is controlled access for the construction trucks. You can't be here.
Me: Okay, so you don't want people in the "Controlled Access" (he really liked saying this) area. I just went through it because I didn't know and you didn't notice me. Now I'm here, and I'm within spitting distance of the sidewalk and you're saying I have to turn around.
Him: Yes, this is a controlled access area.
Me: So, rather than just getting me off the controlled access area by the shortest route possible, you're going to send me back into it.......just on principle?
Him: *looks really pissed off*
Me: Can you tell me why, exactly?
Him: BECAUSE I SAID SO!
Me: Okay, have a good one. Keep up the good work.
...and I turned around and rode back down through the controlled access thing.
Logic.....Cops.....never the two shall meet.

We need more info. Was the critical part of the controlled access those last few feet? Ie was there a crime there and he is protecting the last few feet for evidence collection nad your presence in the last few feet may destroy the evidence? Or did you already cross the critical part?Originally posted by: Fausto
I literally could have spit on the sidewalk from where the cop and I were having the discussion. There was exactly no logic in sending me back the way I came.
Fausto, you are correct that the cop should just get you out of there in the shortest route. He was probably retarded in not letting you pass. However, you already (a) entered a controlled access area without authorization, an area where cops are standing by to protect and (b) implied that you were considering breaking a direct order from a cop. Both of which could get you into big trouble. Should cops just ignore those things to make you happy? I agree with Amused. It is the cops job to make sure no one goes through that gate (in either direction). He is just doing what he was commanded to do. Give him a little break (especially when you have already done multiple wrong things).

well, he could have just backhanded you with his flashlight and dumped your body in the cement mixer. Sending you back through the 'Zone' doesn't sound so bad compared to that...

Uh...yeah. Right. Whacking a federal employee in the head is a really smart thing to do if you like keeping your job. 😕

He's with a security company that works here. Dunno his exact "powers".Originally posted by: MisterJackson
For purposes of clarification (and to really keep this from turning into a cop bashing thread), this guy wasn't a cop.....he wasn't an officer with full police powers was he?
You keep saying "cop", but I get the impression that this guy was a "Security Guard". While I know there are plenty of a-hole cops out there, security guards seem to have a higher ratio of "power-tripping egotistical d1ckheads".
The main reason being is they've either been turned down as a cop or have always wanted to be a cop but didn't meet all of the criteria. They're wanna be cops, and those are the worst kind.
So please clarify for me.
As I said, I almost always give cops the benefit of the doubt. They have a ****** job and I'm not going to be the whiny asshole who makes it worse. This was just an exception.By the way, I know many cops personally. My brother, one of the most stand up guys you'll ever meet (my polar opposite), became a cop 5 years ago. I thought the profession would eat him up and spit him out because he's too much of a "nice guy". I was pleasantly surprised to find he not only is a great cop, he seems to be setting an example that others on his force are following. People around the community instantly give me respect when they find out he's my brother, and he and I have gone through the roughest part of town and he's befriended most everyone we ran into there.
He believes in what I call "Preemptive policing", meaning he gets to know these people on a personal level even before there's a "call".
He volunteered to be the cop at a local highschool when no other officer wanted that job, and he loves and respects those kids with the feeling being mutual from them.
Some of the horror stories he tells me of what kids do now in high school compared to when I graduated not even 11 years ago sends chills down my spine, and I've seen a lot of sh1t.
Yes. They gave them to all the security people here after 9/11. My boss and I have a running bet as to when one of them will blow his/her foot off since they're mostly not trained LEO's or ex-military. It was a big stink because weapons on federal property used to be a huge no-no regardless who you were.Fausto, did he have a side arm?

Security guards are not cops. I don't know about where you are, but in Ontario, Canada I understand that they have absolutely NO more legal authority than a regular citizen. Yet their jobs require that they be "in charge". So one technique they all learn early is to be quite forceful in asserting their authority, but not in a real physical sense. That way they can bluff you into doing what they want without resorting to physical actions that might be illegal. In Ontario, for example, they cannot arrest anyone (other than the fuzzy concept of a "citizen's arrest"), and they cannot physically restrain someone until a proper police officer arrives.
I have the impression that, among Security Guards as a group, there may be a higher percentage who are on power trips. That is not to say "a lot", just more than the fraction among real cops. In fact, contrary to what many colleges would tell prospective students, I have heard of police forces who, in screening new recruits, find that Rent-a-Cops have little to offer over average people. Some are better than "average" - they have the right mindset and already have some training in basic laws and people. Those are the ones the real cops love to recruit.
