*shakes head* Massive logical thinking failure by that security guard. How silly. But I'm happy to say that the majority of police officers (which this guy was not) I've run into, including a good friend of mine who's a rookie this year, are pretty sharp tacks.

yeap rent a cops are the worst.

i went to the mall with my wife, her little brother and my father-in-law (who uses a walker since he has a hard time walking). well we were looking for a Mothers day gift.

well the mall is H shape. we were in the middle of the mall when we got surranded by mall secuirty. They claimed that my wife's brother was throwing crap at a lady. they told us to we had to leave the mall.

Ok fine. i argued for a minute about them accusing him of throwing something. but knew it was a loseing argument because well they were rent a cops.

so we start walking back to the entrance we came in (wich would have been the shortest walk for us) but they wanted us to go out a diffrent exit on the other side of the mall! i said fine they can go me and my father in law will go the other way. they wouldnt allow that either. I blew up at them. the guy was already tired (we were on oure way back to the van) to make him walk extra to show your power is insane.

they threatened to have us all arrested. i told them fine call the cops. My step dad said he will walk it and lets go.

so we start walking. Now he is kinda slow (well duh has a walker and disabled). so they start pushing him telling him to hurry up. he said he coldnt walk to fast so releax. they push him again nearly knocking him over. my wife got pissed and got behind her step dad. Well the guy then pushes my wife! since i was already mad I told him if he touches either one more time i will knock his head off. he asked if that was a threat.

I told him yes. and he damn well better get the cops or there would be trouble.

about that time a undercover/off duty (never found out) cop stepped up and took over. he appolgizes for the guy pushing him. He said he should have never touched them. let alone make him walk across the store. The police officer made one of the guards go get a cart (they have golf carts in the mall) and took us back to the entrance i wanted to go out heh.

So while i had some bad "cops" we found a really nice one also.

heh rant over.

So, I'm leaving work yesterday on my mountain bike. With all the new construction and whatnot here, there's only one entry/exit point to the CDC campus and it happens to be relatively far out of my way.

For whatever reason (I'd find out later), they had one of the side gates open. Since I was on my bike, I figured I'd nip out that way and save myself a few minutes.

Diagram of situation.

The main entrance/exit is way over to the left off the map.

I ride up the side road and am maybe 6 feet away from leaving the campus when one of our illustrious Rent-A-Cops steps in front of me and says "I'm sorry sir, but you can't go this way."

Me: Okay, I didn't know. I won't come this way again tomorrow, but I'm almost off the campus now.

Him: This is controlled access, you can't go this way.

Me: Right, but I already did.

Him: Sir, you're going to need to turn around. This is controlled access for the construction trucks. You can't be here.

Me: Okay, so you don't want people in the "Controlled Access" (he really liked saying this) area. I just went through it because I didn't know and you didn't notice me. Now I'm here, and I'm within spitting distance of the sidewalk and you're saying I have to turn around.

Him: Yes, this is a controlled access area.

Me: So, rather than just getting me off the controlled access area by the shortest route possible, you're going to send me back into it.......just on principle?

Him: *looks really pissed off*

Me: Can you tell me why, exactly?

Him: BECAUSE I SAID SO!

Me: Okay, have a good one. Keep up the good work.

...and I turned around and rode back down through the controlled access thing.

Logic.....Cops.....never the two shall meet.
just like when your Mom breaks out the "BECAUSE I SAID SO!" you know there is no logic behind it.

I agree. but you know as a parent there are times when "because i said so!" is the only answere that will work heh

I would have replied back with, ok, so I'm not supposed to be in that area for my safety because of the costruction traffic, so you want me to go back through it, and risk my life again, instead of going 2 feet over to that sidewalk?

We need more info. Was the critical part of the controlled access those last few feet? Ie was there a crime there and he is protecting the last few feet for evidence collection nad your presence in the last few feet may destroy the evidence? Or did you already cross the critical part?

Fausto, you are correct that the cop should just get you out of there in the shortest route. He was probably retarded in not letting you pass. However, you already (a) entered a controlled access area without authorization, an area where cops are standing by to protect and (b) implied that you were considering breaking a direct order from a cop. Both of which could get you into big trouble. Should cops just ignore those things to make you happy? I agree with Amused. It is the cops job to make sure no one goes through that gate (in either direction). He is just doing what he was commanded to do. Give him a little break (especially when you have already done multiple wrong things).

The reason the gate was open was to get the construction trucks in and out. There was no signage whatsoever indicating this, just the cop sitting at the top of the area. No one at the bottom of the area to keep interlopers such as myself out. If I was to stay out for my own safety, it didn't make sense to send me all the way back through. He just couldn't compute this or couldn't admit that I was right.

I started to tell him he'd probably have noticed I was entering the CONTROLLED ACCESS ZONE if he hadn't been running his mouth with the other guy there, but he looked like he was about to mace me so I shut up.

You should have told him you were entering from the sidewalk, and that you were just riding backwards. Then he would have told you to get back on the sidewalk.

well, he could have just backhanded you with his flashlight and dumped your body in the cement mixer. Sending you back through the 'Zone' doesn't sound so bad compared to that...

For purposes of clarification (and to really keep this from turning into a cop bashing thread), this guy wasn't a cop.....he wasn't an officer with full police powers was he?

You keep saying "cop", but I get the impression that this guy was a "Security Guard". While I know there are plenty of a-hole cops out there, security guards seem to have a higher ratio of "power-tripping egotistical d1ckheads".

The main reason being is they've either been turned down as a cop or have always wanted to be a cop but didn't meet all of the criteria. They're wanna be cops, and those are the worst kind.

So please clarify for me.

By the way, I know many cops personally. My brother, one of the most stand up guys you'll ever meet (my polar opposite), became a cop 5 years ago. I thought the profession would eat him up and spit him out because he's too much of a "nice guy". I was pleasantly surprised to find he not only is a great cop, he seems to be setting an example that others on his force are following. People around the community instantly give me respect when they find out he's my brother, and he and I have gone through the roughest part of town and he's befriended most everyone we ran into there.

He believes in what I call "Preemptive policing", meaning he gets to know these people on a personal level even before there's a "call".

He volunteered to be the cop at a local highschool when no other officer wanted that job, and he loves and respects those kids with the feeling being mutual from them.

Some of the horror stories he tells me of what kids do now in high school compared to when I graduated not even 11 years ago sends chills down my spine, and I've seen a lot of sh1t.

So, before the rest of you here continue the bashing using the term "cop", lets figure out what this guy dealing with Fausto really was.

Fausto, did he have a side arm?

He's with a security company that works here. Dunno his exact "powers".

As I said, I almost always give cops the benefit of the doubt. They have a ****** job and I'm not going to be the whiny asshole who makes it worse. This was just an exception.

Fausto, did he have a side arm?
Yes. They gave them to all the security people here after 9/11. My boss and I have a running bet as to when one of them will blow his/her foot off since they're mostly not trained LEO's or ex-military. It was a big stink because weapons on federal property used to be a huge no-no regardless who you were.

Most campus police are fully swore law enforcment officers. They usually go to the same training as local /state authorities and have state wide juristiction under the right circumstances.

I am not one for dissing them as my family is in law enforcment. However, some make poor cops just like some make poor parents. They can't take a step back and objectivly observe the situation before they put their foot in it.

To me its a good thing that people can question the police. I would still heed any directions, but dont be afraid to question.

Security guards are not cops. I don't know about where you are, but in Ontario, Canada I understand that they have absolutely NO more legal authority than a regular citizen. Yet their jobs require that they be "in charge". So one technique they all learn early is to be quite forceful in asserting their authority, but not in a real physical sense. That way they can bluff you into doing what they want without resorting to physical actions that might be illegal. In Ontario, for example, they cannot arrest anyone (other than the fuzzy concept of a "citizen's arrest"), and they cannot physically restrain someone until a proper police officer arrives.

I have the impression that, among Security Guards as a group, there may be a higher percentage who are on power trips. That is not to say "a lot", just more than the fraction among real cops. In fact, contrary to what many colleges would tell prospective students, I have heard of police forces who, in screening new recruits, find that Rent-a-Cops have little to offer over average people. Some are better than "average" - they have the right mindset and already have some training in basic laws and people. Those are the ones the real cops love to recruit.

That's why during orientation at UW, they constantly repeated this message:

THE CAMPUS POLICE ARE ACTUAL LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS. DO NOT STEAL THEIR HATS.

"Campus Security", OTOH, was free game. :p
