LMAO @ this thread!
Don't sweat it. I ran out of gas more than once, while I worked at a gas station no less!
One time, I ran out of gas while two or three cars back, at a busy intersection. I had a container of gas in my car, so I added most of it to the tank. I went to the front of the car, opened the hood and primed the carb (it was an old car). Coming around the side of the car, I decided to close the hood, so I could hurry and get out of the way. Then, I realized the air cleaner's wingnut might fall off someplace, so I tried to stop the hood from closing. The momentum and weight of the hood was way too much for me to stop, and it closed on my fingers!
There I was with my hand trapped in the hood, cars honking, and no way to do anything about it. Oh yeah, I was also in a great deal of pain with my fingers squished to 1/4" thickness.

I waved to the guy behind me to come give me a hand, which he did. He opened my hood, I started the car and limped off down the road...
Anyway, just take a container with you when you head for the gas station.
