You run it completely out of gas and you risk sucking up all the sludge and grime off the bottom of the tank and damaging your engine and/or fuel system.

People actually believe this?

Fuel is always taken from the bottom of the tank

The pickup is at the bottom, amongst all the junk that accumulates down there over the years.

Every time you fill up, you stir all that crap up.

Somehow, your car keeps running, though.

Somehow, the manufacturer knew this would happen and designed the fuel system properly.

The part about cooling the pump is correct, though.

Don't sweat it. I ran out of gas more than once, while I worked at a gas station no less!

One time, I ran out of gas while two or three cars back, at a busy intersection. I had a container of gas in my car, so I added most of it to the tank. I went to the front of the car, opened the hood and primed the carb (it was an old car). Coming around the side of the car, I decided to close the hood, so I could hurry and get out of the way. Then, I realized the air cleaner's wingnut might fall off someplace, so I tried to stop the hood from closing. The momentum and weight of the hood was way too much for me to stop, and it closed on my fingers!

There I was with my hand trapped in the hood, cars honking, and no way to do anything about it. Oh yeah, I was also in a great deal of pain with my fingers squished to 1/4" thickness. :( I waved to the guy behind me to come give me a hand, which he did. He opened my hood, I started the car and limped off down the road...

Anyway, just take a container with you when you head for the gas station.

your fingers got severed right

Unless your car is special and runs on tears or cookies, in which case you might have found a gold mine.

Eh, if you're desperate, fill up the tank with lighter fluid, nail polish remover, acetone, AFTA, WD-40, brake degreaser, kerosene, benzene, paint thinner, or any other gas/petroleum related product.;)

Heck, if looks, smells, and tastes like gas, that should be good enuf for a self-admitted idiot.:D

I've heard good things about alcohol as a fuel source. A 1.75 L bottle of cheap-ish vodka should get you to the station.

A good way of passing emissions, too...but you'll want something a bit more pure, like everclear;)
