I believe M$ is planning to drop support for Win2K early next year. :(

Nope, they are dropping Windows NT support on January 3rd 2003. There is no end date for support for Windows 2000 that I have heard of. And I am 100% positive about this, my company is upgrading many of our servers to Windows 2000 from NT for this reason, and we've talked many times with the MS folks.

For those that are against MS doing this, what do you suggest they do to stop pirates from reaming them in the ass then?????????????

What would YOU do to stop pirates? It's easy to sit back and be an arm chair critic, but do YOU have a better solution?

Heh, excellent point. MS has every right to get money from 100% of the people that use their software. If you had a product I'd doubt you'd want anyone stealing it.

Um, but this ISN'T stopping the pirates (or people who just want to use Windows without having to activate it!)...all it is doing is inconvienencing their corporate customers. It's a fruitless pursuit.

you could say the same thing about anti theft devices in stores. after all, they only inconvenience/disturb customers eh? all stores should have no security teams, no cameras in the sky, and no detectors at the doors:p why bother with cops at all? i'm sure shoplifting would go down:p

i believe that would be called shoplifters heaven:p

as long as there are pirates and thieves, this little game will be played to make their lives less then perfect. thats the way it must be.

funny how warez monkeys aren't l33t enough just to use linux:p being free its no fun to steal eh?

If the SP1 patch kills warez copies of XP, then how is it not preventing pirates from getting free software???

This all comes down to the point of MS trying to protect their investment. If it inconveniences some people, sorry for it. I'm sure that MS would love to be able to have everyone be happy campers, but I'm sure that the thought of losing millions of $$$ to hackers is even more troubling.

When you buy a new car, trade a car, or sell a car do you bitch about changing the titles and signing papers? Probably, but it's something that has to be done.

All they're trying to do is stop pirates from stealing their sh!t;) I mean, how can you rag on them for that? It may inconvenience you for a little bit, but damn think of the money they'd be loosing from people trying to get a free ride...

Damn, guys, read the article and stop worrying. It says that upgrading to SP1 on an existing installation has the feature switched off. Only when you get "Windows XP with SP1" cds will they have the feature installed. I don't really even see how this is an issue, but I guess I could be missing something.

i have 2 legal versions of xp, but every time i have to reinstall, i used the hacked version simply because i don't have to activate it, or worry about making too many hardware adjustments, and other such BS. The warez community is by far more innovative then MS, and they will find yet another loophole. I'm personally hoping an internal MS XP corporate key gets leaked...that way they'll have to sue themselves for lacking proper security measures.

The SP1 patch won't kill warez copies! It will only kill those who use that one CD key that was leaked.

Let me get this straight... you're implying here that you're pirating software (running 4 machines with XP but can't afford 4 copies of it) and complaining that MS is putting anti-piracy mesaures in place?

Reactivating after an upgrade is free. Plus, for hardware testing, the grace period should be ample time for you to test without activating.

Actually, all PIDs generated by MS internally are tracked to the employee who generated the PID. If an employee-generated PID gets leaked, MS can track it to that employee.

Here's one way to come in out of the dark. ~$100 to buy a licence, COA, CD-KEY, and sticker to legetimize your pirate copy.

I have rather bad news for you and Win2K users

Redmond retirement ratchet spells doom for Win2k

Windows 2000 has been given nine months to live, as far as OEMs are concerned, and Microsoft is pressuring the PC companies to stop offering dual install Win2k/WinXP systems immediately.

Interesting to think about how many M$ employees are pirates of software themselves...

Who do you think the government and large corporations hire to lock down their computer systems?

How will this affect me? Right now I have XP Pro which I got from my school for $10. When I install it I don't have to enter any code at all.

_If_ you are using the FCKGW key it will be disabled I believe. Any other key will still work.

I am not sure whether the legit owners can still use the Windows Updates if they don't install SP1 or several of its components, which would mean that all those people would agree to getting it up the ass with the Media Player stuff. I want to be able to play my legit music, and if Microsoft decides to disable it with some of their software I decide simply not to use that Microsoft software.

I recant my prevoius statement. I was unaware it was only part of the XP CD's that will also contain SP1. In that case, I don't see it being a big inconvienence as I originally thought.

I will be a little more upset when they start using that MS call home thing. Cause like a lot of people here, I have a legit copy of XP, but I use the cracked version cause its easier.

Linux is free? Where do you get it at and how hard is it to use? I wouldn't mind trying something new on my extra computer, as well as having a fall back OS in case it is proven that bill gates is the anti christ. LOL just kidding, I actually lik the fact that he gives lots of money and computers and stuff to charity.

i'll start purchasing an OS from Microsoft once they reduce their prices. To me it should be like $60 compared to the $150+ they've been charging.... and thats being generous.
