Speaking of which, The Microsoft office is soooo expensive I have to choose from either 97 pro, which only now is affordable or Corel Wordperfect office...

Are you using MS OSes now? If so, is price always a justification for theft to you? If not, ignore me :)

Ok, I read the article and I'm still confused. I've been holding off buying XP until MS releases SP1, in the hopes that they'll release a XP version with SP1 on the same CD. Kinda like they did with Win98 and Win98SE. Downloading a 130MB PATCH ("Service Pack" my a$$!) over slow-modem would seriously suck.

So is this "slipstream" thing available now? Or is this "slipstream" thing a warez version?

Bah, maybe I'll just stick with 98SE.

And thanks to those who suggested Linux. I'm gonna try it.

I like XP, I did set the Start menu to look like the Win2K menu, the XP one was just a bit too pretty and annoying. :)

What is the difference between i586 and ppp?

I noticed the i586 has 3 cds. What is the cd3 (supplemental)?

i586 is for Pentium based PCs, PPC stands for Power PC. You'll most likely want to use the first one unless you happen to have a Mac :)

CD3 contains most likely third party software.

To Johnbear007: Mandrake is probably the easiest, you only need CD1 of most distributions to install the OS itself, the other CDs contain programs (OpenOffice, Apache (if that isn't yet on CD1), etc). Do note though that CD2 of Mandrake may contain drivers you need or programs you want in the first place, so it may be wise to download those anyway. If you really want a minimal download you can try the online installation of one of the distributions, where it will only download those things you need for the installation. It will only require a small download for the installation program for that.

Here's the solution:

Everyone in the world who owns a pc installs the corporate XP version
Everyone then installs XP sp1
Everyone's OS is deactivated, and no one can get any work done
The global economy comes to a grinding halt
The world bank and the worlds leaders demand a patch from MS to activate everyones XP.
If they don't comply, MS fails as a company because no one can afford their overpriced products anymore
Everyone now has a working XP with sp1 and MS can't pull this stunt again.

How 'bout it? Power of the people!! :D

That wouldn't be the Corporate version as he asked for. Corporate versions don't have set prices, they are negotiated. I doubt you could get one for less than 100 licenses.

I'm not sure how old you are, but wait until you buy your first house and get your first summer power bill.

That's about 1.9 cycles faster than me this morning... even after two Frappccinos.

(Yes, I visited California, and got pussified. My older brother approached me and said, "hey little boy, wanna try a pussified coffee drink? It's free." ...and I've been hooked on this sh!t ever since.)

I'm so sick of Microsoft and their activation code Bullsh!t!

I went back from XP Pro to Win2K because I was sick of all the crashing and BSODs I got in XP and once I reinstalled everything, my fvcking Office XP no longer works because it says it has already been registered! Well not sh!t! It was on my system before. Now I've got to go through the hassle of CS to get them to reset the registration of my legit Office XP. Forget it, I'll just get a code somewhere else or use Office 2000 instead.

It takes all of five minutes or less. I know, I've had to call them before. There is virtually no hold time at all. The biggest pain in the ass is punching in the numbers of your PA code, then having to repeat it to the CS folks.

Yet you're throwing a fit and refusing to use your copy of Office? Why?

Seems silly to me...

As for your problems with WinXP... they're 180 degrees from my experience with it. I've had exactly zero blue screens since I started using it in Jan. of this year.

My experience has been similar. XP overall has been rock solid for me. The only blue screens I have had were caused by the NVidia drivers which cannot be blamed on MS.
