Well, I can't even justify purchasing XP Home. I have tried it many times in different places and I do like my ME better! My Windows has everything XP has and a lot more -- IE6, updates, fixes, is more speedy, is infinitely more compatible and reliable. Of course, when I upgrade from only 256MB of RAM, I may very well wan to to get an XP, but how I wish it wasn't necessary. I know that ME becomes ineffective and slow with more than 256MB.

The only key that will be blocked is the so-called 'Devilsown' key, which starts with FCKGW.
I think there is already a hacked version of the SP1 beta out there somewhere too.

What is more annoying are the changes to for example the media player, which will disallow you to play copyprotected media on your PC.
As I don't even have a stereo anymore (just rip all my new CDs immediately and play them as mp3) this would mean I either cannot play all my legal music anymore, or would have to dig out all the originals again just to be able to play a song. So far for random playlists too.

I really hope they choke on that one.

Hmmmm well 2K Server is the only one that can fit my needs anyway, but I have worked with XP many times, and everything is functional in it, Security packs are separate. So guess there isn't really a need to install it

It's not going to be an extra 5 min of work. Its going to be an extra 5 min of work, times how many computers you have, for some corps this will be in the millions.

Now see a bit of a problem? Sure, security is nice, and it works, but only when it doesn't unduely interfere with the legitimate users.

OEM full copies can be had for $90 (home) and $130 (pro).

However, price is not an issue. How else can you explain people hacking keys for shareware that is only $10?

At the present moment, an upgrade to Windows XP SP1 from Windows XP with no SP installation will not give any problems or errors about an invalid CD-Key on a corporate version of Windows XP. This is because the new algorithm feature has been switched off in SP1 upgrades. To get to see this new feature, you would have to slipstream SP1 into the Windows XP installation media and setup Windows.

What do they mean by slipstream?
So if you upgrade WinXP to WinXP SP1 (download the update from M$) you don't have problems? But if you go and pirated a copy of WinXP that is already upgraded to SP1, it won't work? Or SP1 just won't work period?

i have 3 copies of XP pro from microsoft (remember that 'contest' where you take their training tests?) on my desk, however I haven't touched them because of the activation. i'm using a corporate copy install.

From what I understand, if you have a pirated copy of XP using that key, and go to download SP1 from Windows update, it will not install and will disable Windows update... and probably send all your info to MS.

But of course, if you have a copy with that 1 key that is going to be blocked, there is already a way around it...

Pay for it? Using XP as your primary app for a couple years is different than downloading low quality mp3's and rarely listening to them in a sampling (fair use) style. The law on fair use is very "interperable" but warezing a copy of XP and using it as your OS easily fails the tests.

As usual, MS is punishing legitimate users for their own inability to secure their products. If MS had any real competition, they could never pull crap like this -- companies would tell them to stuff it and go to the competition that didn't need them to go through the hassle.

The irony is, this will cause no problems for the pirates. SP-1 "fixed" is already available, there's already keygens available that will generate new "legit" keys, and there's no freakin' way they're gonna keep the warez'ers from continuing as usual. Who gets punished? The legit users. Why? Because MS has a monopoly.

More disturbing to me is the stupid "can't play what you want on your PC" media player update. Basically, yet another slap in the face of legit users. Just like the RIAA loves punishing it's legit buyers (can't play your legit CD on your MP3 player etc etc), it looks like this updated media player punishes the legit user again. The pirate will still get the copyrighted stuff anyway, with all copyright stuff removed -- the 'normal' user that doesn't know where to get that stuff will be punished and will not be able to use the products they purchase as they please anymore.
