If you were able to create a sword with a blade so thin

Would it be able to slice through the toughest/hardest materials without effort? Would it cut at all? Since the blade physically does exist(you would be able to see and touch it), one would argue that passing this blade through an object should split/sever it apart.

Alternatively on the other side of the coin, even though the blade physically does exists in the other 2 dimensions, it does not cut since the edge of the blade does not physically exist as there is no 3rd dimension so passing this invisible edge through an object causes no damage. You would then also make the assumption that while the blade is still in the object, it would be "stuck" since the other 2 dimensions occupying the same space will create a sort of lock that prevents the blade from tilting in any direction.

This is somewhat of a followup to my other hypothetical discussion on being shot by a grain of sand at the speed of light. Lets see what kind of explanations you guys can come up with this time. 😀

It would slice 99.99999......% of all objects.

So the answer is there are some things it would not cut.

My explanation: darkxshade desperately needs to get laid.

Well that's sort of why I'm asking, my penor is 2d... I'm afraid I'd kill this new hooker I'm trying to nail. 🙁

No worries, i'm sure he likes it rough.

It would effortlessly slice through any object made of any substance in the known universe while at the same time leaving the object completely intact. Because what you are basically talking about is an imaginary sword.

This.

If something could magically be 2D, then I'd say it wouldn't cut/slice things due to either A) not being able to interact on the 3D plane, or B) super fragile/brittle.

Considering that all matter in the universe is composed of particles that exist in three dimensions, and everything that exists is made of matter, I'd say it would be impossible to create a true two-dimensional object. Even if the object were only a quark wide, it would have width, and thereby exist in a three-dimensional plane. So the question is outside the bounds of what is physically possible in our universe. Thus, we really can't say how it would react when confronted with the physics of our universe.

There's no such thing as a 2D blade. The closest you could get would be a one molecule thick blade, which is still 3D because molecules have a finite size.
