If you still think Obama is intelligent . . .

President Obama required two heavy-duty teleprompters on Monday during a three-minute speech in which he nominated Alan Krueger to serve as chairman of his Council of Economic Advisers.

"I am very pleased to appoint Alan and I look forward to working with him," Obama said, staring at the large, flat-screen monitor to his right, then shifting his eyes to the teleprompter on his left. "I have nothing but confidence in Alan as he takes on this important role as one of the leaders of my economic team."

Three minutes. Two teleprompters.

Three minutes, people. The leader of the free world cannot do three minutes without a teleprompter AND a backup teleprompter.

I never dreamed that the Democrats could find someone to make Bush look like a good communicator. Obviously I gave them far too little credit.

Just by way of comparison, Bill Clinton could do a full speech off the cuff if his teleprompter broke. Sarah Palin did almost her entire '08 convention speech from memory because the applause ran very long and the teleprompter operator did not pause the scroll.

I do not think highly of President Obama, but I choose to find better things to criticize than his desiring/needing teleprompters, especially since public speaking sucks.

It's weird. I can't imagine he has a lot on his mind watching the country swirl around the shitter.

It's not a backup teleprompter though. Right? They always run both of them, so that he can have that mesmerizing head tilt thing going on. It's some kind of occult ritual, and I think it has something to do with him being black. We will find out more once he is in his final year of office. Thats always when that kind of stuff comes out. But it is all meaningless since no one with a brain would actually watch any of these people. Watching them is like watching soviet propaganda from the 1970s.

I do not think the ability to memorize (or not) a three minute speech is a measure of intelligence.

Bush couldn't even read a teleprompter.

The speeches he read from prompters or paper were just horrible. Even with all the stuttering and Bushisms, his unscripted stuff always sounded better. It sounded more sincere.

Bush is an interesting case since if you look at his earlier speeches he was very good. Then he went full retard. No clue why.

Point, but still - three minutes? You have the guy's name, you have the guy's nominated job, what more do you need?

Maybe he never really thought he would become President, or the gravity just hit him late. Bush actually spoke very well one-on-one, or when he was speaking about something important to him, but he did suck at reading the teleprompter. Or maybe Bush was holed up with Cheney and all his speeches were made by his Secret Service body double, a la Saddam.

They all use two teleprompters whenever possible; it provides some semblance that they are connected with their audience, panning around making eye contact. The better speakers can incorporate actual eye contact; Clinton was a master at that, as was Reagan. Obama tends to look like he's watching a ping pong game, but he certainly sounds good.

not sure comparing Obama to someone who went senile while in office is a good idea if you're trying to defend his need for teleprompters. remember not all of us aren't fans of Obama are necessarily fans of Reagan.

I'm not necessarily bashing Obama for using teleprompters. All politicians use them, and frankly the President especially has better things to do than memorize speeches. But - three minutes? There has to be a point at which one thinks "If I go out and give a three minute speech using teleprompters, I'm going to look like an idiot."

Well, there SHOULD be that point anyway.

i get your point on that, if you can't remember a 3 minute speech you've got problems.

He should learn sign language and have something sign what he's supposed to say. That way it looks like he has a crazy awesome memory.

Agreed, they all use them, and with the possible exception of Reagan Obama reads them better than any other.

But - three minutes?

At the end of Reagan's reign he barley could remember our involvement in Iran-Contra scandal ;)
