i have my own home theater, and one of my go to movies to show people how awesome it sounds is the scene in avatar where the main guy has to capture the dragon thing and fly it for the first time. it has amazing visuals and sound.

saving private ryan opening scene is also awesome, although there is one explosion that sounds weird. jurassic park also has pretty awesome sound and visuals. finding nemo is another. black hawk down, the last hour is a audio bliss. lone survivor also has amazing sound once the battle gets going. pacific rim also has amazing sound in general.

a lot of older movies like you are talking about, the sound simply is not that good in them. i'd never use an older movie to debut it due to just that, unless there was a recent remaster that fixed it.

but even older movies remastered, in my experience with what i've seen, the sound simply isn't good because the source was never as good i'm guessing. recent example i can think of is the remaster of the original robocop. the sound just isn't great by any means.

For cinematographic quality: Forrest Gump
For audio/visual quality: Samsara

Master and Commander, assuming were talking about a kick ass home theater that is :)

Yep, M&C is definitely up there with its sound quality. Saving Private Ryan as well.

Personally, for me, the opening scene of Star Trek (2009). Say what you want about the plot and lens flare, but the AV quality of that film is top notch.

When I get new gear, I watch less loved movies to start with. That way I find the bugs and fix them, and I have time to get used to the new setup so I can enjoy it while watching the good movies instead of constantly being distracted by it.

Scenes:

FOTR: Balrog

The Rock: Hummer chase

Ghost In The Shell: opening credits

King Arthur: final battle

Heat: bank robbery

The Matrix: can you fly that?

Star Trek First Contact: launch

T2: trust me

Who Framed Roger Rabbit: Toon Town

The Last Samurai: you try

i was actually very disappointed with the sound in the bank robbery scene in heat when i watched it on my HT for the first time. you can tell it is from an older movie. i'm not sure if there is a newer/remastered bluray, but the one i have it just wasn't what i was hoping for.

LORT or Hobbit, i am leaning towards Hobbit. If you when overboard with subs then probably a newer movie with space ships, maybe Thor or star trek

Oblivion for the picture quality. But I might just go Fifth Element although my wife is pushing for shawshank since I haven't seen it. Of course, she hasn't seen clockwork orange, but that's not on the list...;)

When I set up my dedicated HT room, I played 2001 a Space Odyssey. It is the perfect movie for testing an HT system, shit, its simply the perfect movie.
