When I set up my dedicated HT room, I played 2001 a Space Odyssey. It is the perfect movie for testing an HT system, shit, its simply the perfect movie.

Silence is under-rated as a way of enjoying a movie. With a Michael Bay movie, everything is constantly loud and really don't hear any subtlety beyond bullets flying around in 5.1.

When the only sound in a movie is the main character's breathing against the silence of space, it's intense. I don't think I'd choose 2001 as my first movie (I'm still undecided) but I like where you're brain is.

I still just need a projector that is decent, it wouldn't even be a dedicated room to just that.

It's pretty much mostly set up all ready.

One of these days.

Oblivion does seem like would a good one to me, just for the vid in it.

Gladiator

The Avengers

All of the BBC Planet Earths.

If I had one I'd be doing many I suppose.

Blade Runner

My Go-To's:

*Showing off audio*
The Matrix - office helicopter scene
Jurrassic Park - T-Rex escapes
5th Element - The Diva's song
Godzilla (2013 US) - Any scene with Godzilla's roar
The Hobbit - Any scene with Smaug

*Showing off visuals*
Avatar - Any scene, really
Prometheus - Any scene with something flying
Pacific Rim - Jaeger fight scenes or Tokyo City
Tron Legacy - The whole film
Ender's Game - Any scene (also bc it's one of my all-time favorite books... read it before you watch it)

Overall I'd say Pacific Rim if I had to pick one. Amazing visuals with some of the richest colors on any movie (not over-saturated like Avatar, IMO). Also, the audio when Gipsy Danger blasts the foghorn... hnnnng!!

Current setup:
BenQ W1070 projector onto 110" screen
Denon 1613 receiver
Klipsch RF3 mains with RC62 center. Definitive tech BP 2002 towers for surrounds/bass (overkill for surrounds but I don't have a matched center for them... this setup pushes Audyssey multieq to its limits when correcting the 5 audio channels, haha)
i7 4770K, 8GB RAM, 256GB 840 Pro SSD, GTX 760

Gravity has some amazing sound and picture quality. The movie is maybe so-so to me, but it's a reference quality disk otherwise.

Also Exodus Gods and Kings. Another so-so movie with excellent audio and video quality

I can basically pick any of these and it'll be a good demo.
Any of the Hobbit movies.
Jurassic Park
John Wick
Top Gun
Blade Runner
Skyfall
The Fifth Element
Star Trek
Braveheart has some good audio
Any of the Dark Knight trilogy movies have great audio
Iron Man
The Avengers
Inglorious Bastards
Blackhawk Down
The Transformers movies are good too

Dude, you nailed it. I have a pretty epic 9.2 theater with custom line arrays and six subwoofers and this is my go-to when I want to show it off. I've probably watched that movie 20 times. It's epic.

Wow! Details please!

Does 9.2 add a lot to the experience?

FWIW I compared my 500-lumen Viewsonic LED vs. the previous Epson 5010 with really similar results. 720p vs 1080p, and the Epson was obviously brighter & could do a larger picture, but 1:1 they were pretty dang close. I've recently been playing with the replacement 800-lumen model & it's brilliant:

Honestly, I don't think I could ever go back to a lamp-based projector. The contrast on the LED models is just too good. Plus low heat & instant on! Downsides is no advanced features, i.e. no lens zoom, no lens shift, etc., but if you properly mount it in the room, it's fine. Plus it's small & the LED bulb lasts forever. Can't wait until TI releases a 1080p chip & they start doing things like zoom lenses & lens shift type of features!

Fifth Element is a good one. Silly, fun, colorful. Or maybe The Incredibles.

The Incredibles has great sound! I think my next test disc for sound will be Furious 7. Saw it in fake IMAX (albeit with a really great sound system) & it was super fantastic, one of the better sound-edited movies I've seen in a long time. The SFX were just really well-done & sounded great, instead of just big booms.

Fully soundproofed room. Pretty small at 11.5x17 due to a small house. Only seats 3, but that has never been a problem. Line arrays have 20 Aura NS3-193 drivers in each L/R and 12 in the center channel. Subs are 4 Adire Shivas in the front, sealed, and dual Dayton RSS315HF 12's on the right side. Used a calibrated microphone to measure and EQ the fronts and subs, then ran Audyssey for all the channels.

I've never been a huge fan of surround and don't think the extra 2 channels do much. I'd be perfectly happy with just 2 channels up front but when building this theater I said screw it, it will only be a few hundred more to add 2 more channels and just did it.

Projector is an Epson 8350 projecting onto an acoustically transparent Seymour AV 104" screen I built, which mounts in front of the center channel (you can see the four blocks it attaches to). I never took a completed picture but you can get the idea by looking at this:

Like any Christopher Nolan movie Interstellar has a dynamic soundscape. From rumbling bass of tubas, drums, and engines, to the tinkling of rain and dust particles, audio wise it's a treat.

There are a huge range of colors from the greens and blues of the farm, to the deep blacks and heady contrast in the space scenes.

The story and acting are incredible too.

9.2, LOL! My HT room is so small I cant even do 6.1 properly.

And that's an interesting installation Mazeroth.

As others have said Rambo 4, which is a good movie or (i know i am in the minority here) i would go with Transformers 1. I still enjoyed this movie.

As of next week my answer will change to be Mad Max: Fury Road.
