If you had to choose, would you rather your kid smoke marijuana or cigarettes?

I have heard the former US surgeon general speak about this in person and have read the LaGuardia report. Ergo, I must conclude the obvious based on the lesser of the two evils. Nevertheless, I don't plan on trying nor do I advocate it.

neither...but if i had to pick. probably pot...only if he is responsible. and doesnt get addicted to it. and yes kids. you CAN get addicted to pot..ive seen people get addicted...dont say no no no u cant..cuz YES YOU CAN..its MENTALLY ADDICTING...

the scientific facts aren't the factor in my cigarette decision

the facts that all of my good friends that i used to smoke pot with ALL moved on to heavier things
all of us did completely idiotic and dangerous things while stoned
everyone underwent a personality change, i watched best friends get into brutal fistfights over the stupidest reasons
i look back at my time of drug use and remember lying to my friends and family, stealing from my friends and family
not caring about anyone or anything

i wasn't addicted, i quit without a problem (a million times easier than quitting cigarettes)
but my friends never pulled out of their drug use

one became a local dealer - he's in prison now

another moved on to coccaine - 2 years after high school he was loaded on coke and wrapped his car around a tree. he was in intensive care for 2 weeks, in the hospital for 4 months. Three months after he learned to walk again he got into another drug related car accident. He's been into drug rehab 3 times.

a third was one of the smartest guys i knew. he was on the schools academic team with me. he was my image of a responsible stoner. (and he was responsible for a couple of years)
he got busted 3 times in college and his fiancee demanded he stop smoking pot. he agreed. a year later his fiancee and her family take a vacation. the guy throws a party at their house, they have a bon fire - he gets stoned and uses his future father-in-laws tractor to put a large round bale of hay into the fire. it gets out of control and burns down the corn crib.
last time i seen him - he's single and stocking shelfs at the local grocery, he lives with a friend because his parents threw him out after he stole money from them.

a girl that used to smoke with us, she was VERY pretty (and very smart)
over the course of about 2 years (of pot smoking) she lost A LOT of weight (to the point of not being attractive anymore)
she went from being peppy and social to being depressed and quiet.
her arms were full of scars from where she'd put out her cigarettes when she was stoned.
a year after high school she became a carny

i could tell more about my pot smoking years, but it's not worth my effort.
maybe YOUR experiences of getting stoned are different than mine, but either way - i witnessed good, smart kids enter the world of marikwanna and never come out. They may be happy where they are right now, and thats important. But I know they could have done so much more with their lives.

Btw, out of the 10 or 15 people in the pot smoking clan - there are 2 of us that are drug free (myself included)

Will anyone here admit that some people are just destined to be 'in the drug world' so to speak? Please>?

jntdesign, don't assume because your kid is smoking pot that he is going to be like your friends. maybe your friends are just like that anyway. or are you saying that smoking pot makes you more likely to be that sort of person.

Maybe:

That sort of person is more likely to smoke pot.
That sort of person will do it anyway.
Your kid is going to be that sort of person regardless of if they smoke pot or not.

JNT:

If pot was legal, give me a realistic amount of how many of those 10-15 people would be drug users, regardless of pot. I knwo that the fact that pot is in the 'black market' increases that chance by 10x. But assume pot is not associated with the black market.
