Haha - split exactly 50/50 when I voted :p I'll take a manual please :p

3 out of 4 of the cars I've owned have been manual - once you perfect your techniques, you don't even notice that you're shifting the gears. Traffic is not a problem.

Auto.

Trying driving a big ass pickup or SUV with a stick. And if I'm in my old age and just wanna relax on a long trip, I sure as hell won't be rowing a manual.

It's funny how people equate driving a stick with manliness. If you can't see the needs and uses of automatic transmissions, than you're an absolute tard! :p

owned.

Lamborghini? (Looks like a manual in the pic)
Ferrari?

Performance cars have manual, luxury cars for the rich and lazy have automatics.
People who want to drive have manual, people who want to be driven have autos of chaufers(sp?).

*official* you are stupid *official*

luxury cars aren't for rich and lazy. they are for people who give more importance to comfort. i agree, manual is more fun, but don't argue with me saying driving a manual is more comfortable in a metro city...

This is a side note:

Amazing you know, I always thought automatic cars add up to over 90% of car sales in U.S.A. I smell fish seeing that over 90% of ATOT claim they drive a manual.

well, we are a very small portion of the US. I would not be surprised if a significant amount of us drove stick. hell, even a poll here is too targeted...

The number is closer to 85% and is CORRECT.

Taking a look at a tech oriented forum and trying to compare percentages with the average buying public is downright lunacy.

Remember, the most vehicles sold these days are pickups and SUVs and most of those come with autos. And the majority of the best selling cars in America (Camry, Accord, Taurus, Altima, Lumina Grand Prix, etc.) are sold with autos.

who the hell is going to want to drive a manual when they're 85?

my next car will be stick, and probably the one after that, and probably the one after that, but if i could only choose one for the rest of my life, it would be auto.

auto. once you get older, you get more sense and find better things to do than to have "fun" with driving. manual would be a pain.

Stick

As for those who said about driving a stick when they get old, if you go to India you'll realize 99% of the cars are sticks, I'm sure the elderly are still driving a stick.

So wha happens if your left leg gets blown off?

What happens if your right leg gets blown off?

You can get a medical permit and you can get an automatic, oh, and in India since so many people are jobless/homeless, getting a driver is cheap and easy, something most of the middle-class has.

In most other countries, the numbers are flip-flopped in favor of manuals. When I was in the middle east, I even drove a weird Mercedes minivan with a stick, and in Brazil all the taxicabs had stick.

For my part, to answer NFS4's question, I would have no problem driving an SUV or large pickup with a stick, and for the most part would prefer to do so.

Automatics make a lot of potentially fun cars boring, and dull cars duller. Notwithstanding LordJezo's silly speculation about losing a leg, I would take a stick every day of the week and twice on Sunday. I have been driving for 18 years and have no misgivings about this choice. Maybe I'll feel differently when I'm 85, but I doubt I'll even be driving then (not to mention that my grandmother, who was small and rather frail, drove a Saab 900 Turbo with a stick into her 80s).

Stick all the way
I live in southern california where the freeways are 99% gridlocked from traffic
just turn up the idle RPM, and you don't need to add gas when you let go of the clutch to start moving. It's no different than controlling a brake if you do that.

Auto sucks, it's like driving a toy, no control of the car...
Plus driving manaul is completely natural for me now. I don't even think about it. I can eat and drive manual at the same time with one hand.

How much control do you want in a 6,000 lb pickup or a 4,300 lb Mercedes S-Class??

If you're talking about a sports car or sports sedan, then fine. But if you're talking about a damn family car like an Accord or Camry or an SUV like a Highlander, Explorer or Expedition, no one wants to be bothered.

The same amount I would want in any other car. An Accord or Camry can be a relatively entertaining car to drive with a stick, but with an automatic they are completely neutered. I had a lot of fun driving my old '84 Accord with a 5-speed (and 206K miles!) in the twisty mountain roads of northern California, but my '98 Accord EX V-6 was completely tame and boring, even though it was far more powerful.

Well, I guess that 80% of Accord/Camry owners and 85% of America disagrees with you;)

For me right now stick makes sense. I rarely end up in stop and go traffic. A manual transmission is cheaper to fix. A manual transmission car costs less than an auto transmission car to buy.

For other people a manual transmission is not for them.

- In heavy traffic a manual transmission is a b*tch to drive with. In the times I have been stuck in heavy stop and go traffic for extended periods, my feet will ache from all the shifting, not to mention it's not good for the clutch.

- The cars resale value is substantially lower unless it's a sports car. For me this doesn't matter too much as when I trade this car in it will probably have 200 - 300k miles on it and be worth maybe $100. If it was an auto it may be worth $150 then. Kind of pointless.

- Other family members may not be able to drive it. It's good if you don't want anyone driving your car but can be a problem if for some reason they do need to drive it. My wife can barely drive a manual transmission and on long trips I have to drive through any areas of stop and go/street level traffic.

Stick while I'm still young, but when I'm older and have bad knees and poor reflexes, auto will make sure I can still crash into young punks that try to pass my pimpmobile on the freeway. So if the question requires a "for life" answer it would be auto, but if it's a "what I like now" quest it has to be manual.

True, but most people don't care about driving, and view it solely as a way to get from Point A to Point B (preferably while eating breakfast, talking on the phone, and applying makeup). I am not one of those people. The overwhelming majority of Americans also drink Miller/Budweiser, don't ever read books, and like fast food, and I don't agree with them on those issues either.

When I was younger I preferred a stick, but now auto all the way. Most cars with sticks I have trouble driving anyway due to lack of leg room. And besides ... my shlong is big enough that I don't have to prove anything with my car.

Ahhh, but driving a stick vs driving a manual doesn't make you more drunk, smarter, or healthier one way or the other...
