So let me get this straight? Your plan is to constantly take your eyes away from the road to read txt's while operating a 1ton vehicle at 65mph+?

riiight...

And then bitch when he gets a ticket for it after they make it illegal to do so.

Heh...this is my point!

A) It's more dangerous to text message and that's what everyone will start doing.

B) Impossible to enforce because all you have to do is hold your cell phone beneath the window.

My OP was very tongue-in-cheek and was specifically designed to pinpoint the exact fallacies of cell phone bans.

Nah, your OP only showed that you're an idiot.

I think everyone should be *forced* to drive like a Lamborghini or Lotus Extige....no distractions like radio, or temperature control! ;)

You should not be using your cell phone while moving. Period. When on the road, you should focus on the road. You can always call back.

I take it you never talk when you're driving with someone?

That's a bad comparison. You can talk to someone inside your car while keeping 2 hands on the wheel.

Ever heard of bluetooth?

I have no problem with headsets. I was thinking of the OP when I made that response.

If you have a manual, 90% of the time your right hand rest on the stick... how is that any different?

That's not a fair comparison and you know it. If anything, driving stick makes you more attune to what's going on while driving.

I've been in several close calls with dumbfvcks who were too busy talking on the phone to pay attention to the road.

Yes I made an account just to post in this thread. The OP is an idiot, or at least ignorant. When driving, it's not just your life but everybody else on the road, or on the pathways that you're putting at potential risk. Using a mobile phone does impair your ability to drive EVEN if you use a handsfree device, but they don't go as far to restrict that freedom yet. So you think "O I haven't gotten into any accidents" means that it's safe? If your logic functions in that sense, it's flawed. If you crash, you could be dead. Or in jail if you kill someone. Many things are a distraction (obviously. If you think we're ignorant enough to not know even talking to a passenger is a distraction you're wrong), but some pose more danger than others. These laws are here to reduce distractions and chance of possible danger/death/injury.

One wheel on the tyre. Do that in a driving test in Australia and you'll fail. Just because they don't ban drinking coffee too doesn't mean it isn't dangerous. Use your common sense.

And as said by DrPizza, driving is a privilege. If you have no sense of responsibility when on the road, don't drive.

And as I've stated multiple times (to which nobody seems to have an answer for): There are already laws against doing dangerous things on the road that cell phone talking can lead to. Why do we need laws on top of laws? This is just as bad as the "open alcohol container" laws some states have. A half full bottle of rum sitting in the passenger seat isn't harming anybody, yet it's illegal to have because it "may" cause the driver to drink it.

The vast majority of people can drive while talking on phones and there ARE benefits to it. You guys also seem to have missed the fact that my whole argument for text messaging is very tongue-in-cheek. It's literally next to impossible to catch somebody text messaging while driving (even if it is illegal, which I'm sure it will be), yet it's probably MORE dangerous. Cell phone bans will only encourage people to text more which means less eyes on the road. Hold the phone underneath the windows and occasionally glance down to type our your message...impossible to enforce because the police can't see.

If people prove they can't drive while using cell phones (swerving, getting tickets, causing accidents, etc) then they will lose their license because of their bad driving. That's the perfect solution. Also, I haven't seen any studies showing that the rate of collisions have increased at the same rate as cell phone use.

Brilliant! Open containers for all! Driving on the cell phone FTW! Blanco Nino for president!

Ninja Edit! - This all makes perfect sense now. I should run for governer! I could save the state millions. We could take the DWI laws off the books, as anyone who has trouble driving under the influence (swerving, getting tickets, causing accidents, etc) then they will lose their license because of their bad driving! This is brilliant! I promise to give you a cushy job in the ministry of pizza delivery for coming up with the idea Blanco! You can use that as a springboard for your presidential bid.

Explain to me again who got hurt because there was a bottle of rum sitting on the seat that had been previously opened?

Explain to me again who got hurt when I drove today while talking on my cell phone?

As I've said before, you sound just like an alcoholic trying to justify driving drunk. I'm sure there are plenty of them out there that could get home while over the legal limit without causing an accident. Does that mean we should let everyone drive while intoxicated?

Just because you didn't hurt someone this time doesn't mean you'll be so lucky next time. There is no question that it impairs your ability to drive. If you can't realize that then you're a huge ****** dumbass.

I think what your missing BlancoNino is that the law is to try and prevent accidents... you cant wait till everyone gets in an accident or kills someone to throw the book at them. Its much better to pull someone over for talking on there cell phone then it is to put them in jail and take away their lisence for killing someone!

:)

UPDATE!

Looks like Washington State is expected to pass a law against talking on cell phones while driving unless you can do it without using up your hands.

Looks like I'll just resort to getting a lot of text messages in my plan and texting while driving. Whether it's illegal or not, cops can't tell if you're text messaging while driving...unless you're swerving...in which case a person needs to be pulled over anyway (thus making the law retarded).

I'd say I hope you wrap your car around a tree while texting but that's just mean.

i get the feeling that "use" of a cell phone also includes texting.

in addition, i think that if you DO get caught texting on a cell phone you will be in a lot more trouble. maybe reckless driving?

oh yeah, and texing while driving is just dumb.

As long as they outlaw eating, smoking, adjusting with the radio, and talking to passengers, I'm okay with this.
