Can't say it's ever happened to me, but I imagine I'd tell them to go to the back of the line.

I was at Costco once, didn't have a cart, and I just got in line with my handful of stuff to buy. About 30 seconds later someone gets in line "behind" me - they weren't really behind me, they put their cart right up next to me. I figured it was probably someone who is unfamiliar with line etiquette and personal space and all that, so I just ignored it. Then 30 seconds after they get in line, I hear them saying "hey that guy just cut in front of us." WTF?! I had been standing in line for at least a minute and was there well before they were. I guess they just didn't see me at first because I didn't have a cart? They didn't have the balls to call me out on my "cutting," they just bitched about it amongst themselves and I just ignored them, paid for my stuff and left.

I'm the last person to cut in line at a store. I go to Costco all the time and almost always just get a few items with no cart, so a lot of times people offer to LET me go in front of them in line, and I refuse. I'm content with waiting until it's my turn.

most people including myself would just seethe inwardly and hate the person. Some rare souls would confront them.

Wouldn't you have to be kneeling to successfully uppercut a kid? You're not making any sense.

Last week I was going to the mall with my girlfriend, (Jersey Gardens for people who know it, in Elizabeth by the Newark Airport in NJ), which I knew would be a nightmare. That has to be the worst "outlet" mall on the planet, I knew that it would be annyoing going into it. We drove around for 20 minutes and there was literally zero parking - cars were swarming all over.

Finally we ask two people who were walking to their car where they were parked - they said - the next row over, a silver altima with a spoiler. We drive over there and there's some guy with his hazards on I guess just waiting for someone in a Civic right by their car. We pull up next to the Altima and put the blinker on - the people get in the car and he manuevers (about 4 car legnths) and puts his blinker on - oh great - here we go. The two people walking into the Altima point to my girlfriends car and the civic guy shakes his head and points to the spot. The Altima people obviously didn't really care so they went to get in their car. I grabbed a pen and a pad got out stood in front of the civic (blocking him from moving - unless he wanted to hit me?) and (made it obvious that I) wrote down his license plate #. My g/f pulled in, he rolled down his window and started cursing (he didn't speak english very well - he may have been spanish or indian). I ignored him, and we went in the mall, we came back - no damage to the car, no problem.

I know the do-gooders on ATOT will say something, but I felt pretty happy with the outcome :)

cliffs:

-gf and i were in a parking lot, asked two people where they were parked, they said the next row over and told us it was a silver altima
-drove to the car put blinker on
-someone in a civic was waiting in the row with their hazards on (blindly waiting), moved and put his blinker on to get the spot
-i got out of the car, obviously wrote down his license plate and stood in front of his car, my gf parked
-no damage
-?
-profit.

If it was obvious they were cutting and not just meeting back up with friends or a spouse..
...and if I was pissed off...

I would say in a loud and irritated voice "Hey! What the hell!? We are waiting in line!"
If you draw a bunch of attention to the situation, then all the people in line will "have your back".
Also, the cashier will tell them to go to the back if you draw their attention to it as well.

Haha. At the grand opening of Guitar Center here a while back, my fiance's mother and I were the 5th and 6th people in line waiting. Some punks came over (I'd say about 5 kids) and got in front of us to stand with their friends. There were giveaways and such, so we didn't think that was fair. She started screaming to the line behind us that there were cutters in front and everyone started yelling. I thought I riot would ensue. Luckily, one of the Guitar Center employees made them move to the back of the line.

I don't know how I would have personally handled the situation, but she's obviously not shy.

if that person cut directly in front of me, i dont say anything but be a jerk to them the entire time - ie. if I have a cart, i bump them with the cart every now and then, and if i dont, i step on their heels every step i take

I would not hesitate to tell them there is a line, and that they need to get to the back of it... if they refuse I would simply cut in front of them.

The only reason people would do this is because they believe no one will say anything. If you are too scared to confront them, go get a store employee.
