Can't say it's ever happened to me, but I imagine I'd tell them to go to the back of the line.
I was at Costco once, didn't have a cart, and I just got in line with my handful of stuff to buy. About 30 seconds later someone gets in line "behind" me - they weren't really behind me, they put their cart right up next to me. I figured it was probably someone who is unfamiliar with line etiquette and personal space and all that, so I just ignored it. Then 30 seconds after they get in line, I hear them saying "hey that guy just cut in front of us." WTF?! I had been standing in line for at least a minute and was there well before they were. I guess they just didn't see me at first because I didn't have a cart?
They didn't have the balls to call me out on my "cutting," they just bitched about it amongst themselves and I just ignored them, paid for my stuff and left.
I'm the last person to cut in line at a store. I go to Costco all the time and almost always just get a few items with no cart, so a lot of times people offer to LET me go in front of them in line, and I refuse. I'm content with waiting until it's my turn.
