And my knees and ankles are in much better condition now than they were two years ago. No more creaking and crackling and stiffness.

I'm seriously excited about triathlon and it's my ultimate fitness motivator.

It doesn't have to do with the calorie intake specifically. The book (Written by that Dr. Oz guy) just uses it as a measure for how much stress your body endures, and how much is too much.

He actually uses the Governator himself as an example. Arnold himself acknowledges that his body is slowing down because of his age AND because of his overtaxing it for years.

The effects aren't immediate, but there are plenty of marathoners out there who have horrible arthritis when they hit their 40s, while the non-super athletes can move freely.

I'm planning long-term here. I want to be as healthy as I can possibly and practically be; for the rest of my life. Not just the present.

Well either way you cut it, if you do anything long enough and hard enough for a period of 10-15yrs+ you will end up falling to bits. If you didn't you didn't do it long enough or hard enough period.

BUT not everyone wants to compete and be at the top of their game. If you do whatever activity/ sport you do to a lesser degree you will last longer over the lonver overhaul.

As for me? F0ck it. I'll lift as heavy and as fast as I can go without injury. As I start rocking over 33-35yrs or so I'll train lighter more often and take longer recoveries and my peaking years are more or less over. I have been at it for 7yrs and have a further 10-12yrs left in the tank till my obsolute peak.

You take your changes and do what you want but at the end of the day if you do ANY sport competitively for a long time you will end up falling to bits. It's knowing when to back off the pedal a bit is the key. A 25-28yr old isn't the same as guy that is 38-41...your recovery will not be the same. And for most people the older you get the more injuries you accumulate along the way, and it all adds up!

Running is tough on the knees, so is churning out hundreds and hundreds of press ups on your elbows.

I agree with Koing on almost his whole post. I played volleyball year round for several years. Now I'm pretty deep into lifting. I'll continue to do both until I can't physically continue. I've suffered through arthritis/tendinitis, minor bone injuries, etc and it doesn't affect me. I'll slow down when I cant physically keep up anymore.

Your only 5'5"?! Doesn't look like it from your pics. Lean down to about 12-13% and you'd look MASSIVE!

I would try it but I have already dropped forty-six pounds from my peak weight and it is going more slowly now as I approach my ideal weight. :(

Good luck to the contestants!

Times a ticking. I think I might just have one contest with 1st, 2nd, 3rd. Not enough contestants in every category.

I wish you could've done this when I went from 260 down to around 180. :p Now, I'm trying to gain muscle and am up to 208, but have slacked lately.

I'm trying out fitday now, but it's getting kind of annoying, none of the foods match up right, but trying to enter the calories myself will be too time consuming. Today I had 3 made from bisquick biscuits with some kentucky colonol flour gravy, two soy sausage links, 2 cups of vanilla lite yogurt, grilled corn on the cob(farmers market), homemade chicken fajitas with 12 different peppers from the farmers market, green beans(from the garden) in a soy sauce/balsamic vinagrette marinade, and half a blizzard. It wasn't a great food day, but i wasn't eating fast food either. Fitday didn't have grilled corn at all, or soy sausage, the yogurt it had was 200 calories a cup, mine was 80 etc. Then again, maybe I should have put this in my blog post.

Enter everything you eat as a custom food, and copy the information from the nutriton label into Fitday. The built in database in Fitday is worthless for everything except "universal" foods like fresh fruits and vegetables.

Thought this could be useful:

http://www.iom.edu/CMS/3788.aspx

The current RDA DV system has been around since the 40s, and even then it was never intended for individual application (it was made for large populations, and was largely based on statistics). The National Academy of Sciences started producing a revised RDA just after the Millenium made specifically for general individual use. Most if not all of the numbers are suprisingly different. I'd go by this as opposed to %DV.

Of course, this is just for general health. Obviously your diet will be different if you're trying to lose/gain weight rapidly; but if you look at DV and calculate this often (ie when using fitday) then you might want to check the numbers and substitue these values.

Will do. How do you guesstimate foods that do not have a label? Should I bother counting the 4 cherry tomatoes I ate while I was mowing the yard?

I've read a decent amount of information about proper eating, but it still hasn't managed to sink in. I'm going to try to find a personal trainer at the university that also does nutritional work. I get that I need to eat lean meats and lots of veggies, some fruits. But I still have not gotten to the point that I can plan out my meals for a day/week and have the right numbers and hit my calorie numbers. I like to make a large meal once or twice a week and carry the leftovers for lunches and dinners, I usually get a bag of chicken breasts or a pork tenderloin and cook them up so that I have a lean protein source. Any links to rough ideas of a day in the life menu of a decent eater?

First perfect your form, then start counting it as exercise.

Not really a diet plan, but see my post about RDA vs NAS values above.

I personally use a digital scale to weigh foods I eat that can't be calculated based on quantity. For example - I eat a lot of boneless, skinless chicken breasts. The nutrition label only gives the information per 4 oz of uncooked chicken. I just weigh out my portions and that tells me exactly how much I am eating. I picked up a digital scale on ebay for $20. I bought it back in 2005 and it still works fine. You can also find them in Walmart and Bed Bath and Beyond, although they will cost more. If you eat a lot of foods whose information is given by weight, it might be a good idea to buy a scale.

To answer your question about what to eat, see this link entitled "What a bodybuilder eats". Even if you don't consider yourself a bodybuilder, the post contains solid recommendations for what anyone looking to improve their physique should eat:

Also refer to my previous post above concerning maintenance calories, BMR, and obtaining a starting point for how many calories to eat each day.

Keep doing pull ups. Try to stop at least one rep short of failure on any given set. Everyone experiences this when they first start doing pull ups and chins. It'll stop within a few weeks.
