You freakin' kidding me? She's at home crying right now after her mom found out. We're working out a plan were she works for $8/hr around the house until paid off.

I could use a new ditch in the back yard

Call Verizon, say some in-store rep said it was unlimited. You just now found out it wasn't, and you'd like to be bumped up to unlimited text messaging. If they can get you to pay more on your original bill, they will probably waive the charges to do so.

You can also threaten to cancel service, that works too.

No go, they waived the charges for this month, but last month stays. Since I just re-upped for two years two months ago threatening cancellation isn't an option either.

Lessons learned...pay the extra $5/month for unlimited texting. Its been established for a long time that children do not stay within their cell phone boundaries. Go with a plan with an unbreakable limit, or go with unlimited.

I was looking from the standpoint that 1500 messages is on average 50 a day.....that's a stupid amount. 130 a day is freaking insane. The highest available on my plan is 5000/month for $20.

Really, Verizon doesn't have an unlimited plan? That's weird. But yea...4000 messages is a lot. I text a lot and I've never gone that high, I have 1000/month which I occasionally go over, but not by much. It's certainly possible though.

Sounds good. Think she's going to learn her lesson and watch the count from this? If so, then you're done here.

Cancellation fee is probably less than the bill....

Who bought her a phone? I think someone should slap that guy first because he didn't teach his daughter how to use a cell phone responsibly and now hes yelling.

To defend your daughter a little... it's really easy to send 4k text messages.

edit: make her pay for it... learn her some responsibility.
Really easy? Jesus christ, you'd have to be on the friggin thing constantly.

Yeah really easy. Simple math tells us that she would send about 4 texts every hour and receives 4 texts every hour.

Call Verizon up and switch to the unlimited text messaging for her phone. They might back date it for you. They did that for me, but it was the wife's phone (10 messages). I didn't give them a story, the offer to back date the change to cover all the messages.

Also, I agree to make her pay the amount.

take phone away / problem solved

4000 text messages a month, holy WTF. Seeing how kids nowadays treat them as an extra appendage it does not surprise me.

Yet another reason to not let kids have phones until they know what responsibility and accountability is.

It's sad, isn't it? Even though high schoolers rely on it even more, people my age (26) still text like crazy. I finally had to buy a 200 text per month package just because of the people would insist on msging me about everything. During the auto show season, I'd be getting and sending close to 50 a day sometimes...definitely had to upgrade the package after that.

130 outgoing messages a day. If each one took 30 seconds to compose. And it took her 30 seconds to read each incoming. Your daughter is spending a minimum of 2 hours a day staring at her cell phone screen.

That's about the point I'd ship her ass off to private school in Finland.

Ok... WOW. 4000? Tell her, no phone 4 u because you just used up your next three months of texting. :D It's a real win. Not only will she not be able to text, but now you get lots of text and minutes for the next three months! Wooo!

It's been shown that humans have trouble with instant gratification vs long term consequences.

Adults have attained a sufficient level of development and experience to have created personal strategies for asessing consequences and avoiding impulsive behavior.

As parents we often make the mistake of believing that our children are capable of the same analysis and strategies that we employ, but sometimes they haven't achieved a sufficient level of development and experience.

Cell phones particularly, have been shown to elicit compulsive behavior, it might be that we should monitor and limit children's use of them.
