To defend your daughter a little... it's really easy to send 4k text messages.

edit: make her pay for it... learn her some responsibility.
Really easy? Jesus christ, you'd have to be on the friggin thing constantly.

Yeah really easy. Simple math tells us that she would send about 4 texts every hour and receives 4 texts every hour.

The plan only charges for outgoing texts. 130 outgoing texts/day. That's 8 outgoing texts/hour assuming that she's awake for 16 hours a day (i.e. only sleeping for 8 hours a night).

However, one has to factor in the fact that teenagers are in school for about 8 hours a day M-F. So for 5 days out of the week, that's only 8 hours available for texting. So averaging 16 texts/hour M-F. Then assume that she's probably got homework, during which time she won't be texting. Average is about 2 hours a night, and we'll include downtime like eating dinner in this.

That leaves us with 6 hours. So just about 22 outgoing texts/hour on a school day. Assuming that each outgoing text has an accompanying incoming text (reasonable), that's 44 messages total per hour on a weekday. That's one text in or out every 1.36 minutes on a weekday.

And that's all assuming that she has no extracurricular activities or other obligations that would further restrict her available texting time. She'd basically have to have the phone glued to her hand.

ZV

You can't discount texting during school hours. My friends sent more messages during class than they did outside of class or from home.

If someone can give me one justifiable reason for a child needing one, I'll gladly concede my point.

LOL- payphone. I haven't seen a payphone since 1995 :D

Apparently the revenue earned from payphones is less than the cost of maintaining them. They used to be profitable :p

For $85 bucks a month I have unlimited email/data/text messages, voicemail, caller ID, 450 anytime minutes, 250 long distance minutes, unlimited calling after 6pm, unlimited incoming minutes at anytime.

What a bargain... (where's the rollseyes emoticon the size of Alaska?) Are you a rep or something?

What on earth does a kid need a cell phone for anyway? I seem to recall growing up without them.

AT&T is ending support for payphones this year, BellSouth dropped them in 2003 and Qwest in 2004, that leaves Verizon with 225,000 phones spanning 28 states.

Don't forget, this is a Canadian plan with Canadian figures. US plans are much more reasonable.

Bingo, we get reamed up here.

But it's still cheaper than $400!

Computers? Who needs them when they're growing up. My grandparents grew up fine without them. And those cars, my great-grandparents didn't have them growing up... etc.

Times change. Deal with it. And the use a payphone nonsense - many are falling apart, being permanently removed, or just unsupported since they cost the phone companies more money than they bring in.

You can live without texting on phones.

I say turn it off for a month or two while she is working the payment off, then sign up for the unlimited plan. She'll hate you for a bit, but that will learn her.

What on earth does a Canadian need with a cellphone? Do you people call trout or something?

Canadian: Hey trout, what's up, how's the water, eh?

Trout: It's cold, eh.

Canadian: Alright, gonna go get a beer now, eh.

I'm afraid to even touch a payphone these days, God knows what could be on it that I'd catch.

Not seen as popular because you don't have texting? Too fucking bad. Grow a pair and stop bowing to the whims of society.

imho you're a fucking idiot, it's more economical to have a basic phone plan and unlimited text messaging.

because if you run over your minutes they charge you more than they would for text messages ;)

Reading comprehension failed.

It's not only to save money but also to prevent them from jumping on the bandwagon to appease their peers.

However, I'm sure in 5+ years when my kids can have their own cell phones texting won't be cool anymore.

For a TEENAGER a cell phone is a LUXURY.

i hate text messages. not only is it totally dumb but i dont get why they charge differently than data. another nickel and diming practice from your wireless carrier.

i can't wait till the whole world is converted to blackberries and the iphones and everyone would just use mobile IM tools. that should teach these mofo telcos another lesson.

And from a parent's perspective, a cell phone can be a great convience to a teenager and a parent (ie: when and where kid needs to picked up or telling kid they have to come home, etc).

i dont think that is the case if you want the cheapest alternative, for example if u already have a family play its generally only 10$ to add another line to the existing plan, but you do have to keep the kids from going crazy, verizon allows blocks to be put on everything, txt, internet, music, downloads (their not usage limits, but just straight up blocks). now prepaid can get pretty expensive, verizon prepaid basic plan is 1$ per day on the days you use it, not counting any peak minutes thats 30$ a month if you make even 1 call every day!

I'm no Luddite, I just don't think there is a valid reason in the world for children to have cellular phones.

If the OP insists on letting his child have a cell phone, get a prepaid one w/ no text feature.

Whats not to be happy with about texting other than the bills (which can be avoided with re-tooling your plan), please.. tell me.
