Naw, I don't think that's entirely correct. I believe with the latest 360 update it will up- convert but only over VGA if I recall. I will try to hunt down that info.

Well unfortunately I don't have a VGA input on my tv, nor DVI. I've only got HDMI & Component for higher resolution sources.

Time to get a new tv.

PS3 + Resistance: Fall of Man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Because you want one of the new formats, the PS3 is the most logical choice. It has blu-ray built in, not to mention better hardware at the same price of a 360 + HD DVD add-on.

I'm sooooo sick of all these people who bash the PS3. In this situation especially, its the smart thing to do.

BTW, if you are looking for HD gaming, the PS3 is the way to go. It has an HDMI port for 1080p gaming and the 360 doesn't.

If you are looking for wifi internet access, the PS3 60GB has built in network card. 360, doesn't.

FTW. It's stupid to base your decision on HD format at this point when the "war" is still undecided. The 360 has more games so, imho, it would be the best choice. Not to mention Sony seems to be losing their exclusive titles.

You're dumb. he wants HD DVD or blu-ray so he would have to add the $200 add-on HD DVD player for 360 making the price the exact same! Hell, if he got the 20gb PS3, he'd be getting better hardware and Blu-Ray for $500 - less than the 360 + HD DVD.

Get a 20gb PS3 and pop a bigger HDD in later when you get one for cheap. I got a 100gb HDD for mine for $65 shipped. Resistance Fall of Man is fun, Motorstorm is going to be sweet, and I'm waiting for Oblivion since it would have brought my PCs to their knees.

I'm not a PS3 fan, and I own the 360 + HD-DVD player, but it sounds like you want the PS3. It's got the Blu-Ray playback built in, SACD support, and since you're not a fan of the 360 menus, which I happen to love, you're all set.

This thread was a shining gem of rationale discussion on ATOT (as close as you can get anyway) until you showed up. He was obviously joking so why don't you just chill out.

And again, the better hardware argument is a moot point. The Xbox was superior to the PS2 in that regard and yet the PS2 dominated the market. No one will give a sh1t about which console is a ZOMGSUPERCOMPUTAZOR if that system never has good developer support. I'll take slightly less horsepower for more and better game variety ANY day. Right now the 360 is looking good simply because there are like 10 million units in homes around the world whereas there's like... 1 million PS3s or something? Developers don't make money by aiming for smallest market.

throw out the hardware comment and my point still stands.

he was not OBVIOUSLY joking to me. the wii not being truly next gen and him bashing on the PS3's price are things regularly brought up.

I do suppose I could have done without the "you're dumb" comment but I'm sick of people blindly bashing the PS3. It's ridiculous. And regarding games. Do you people have any sense of time? The 360 came out a FULL YEAR before the PS3 - so of course there will be better games RIGHT NOW. Don't you think the PS3 will have a few good game by next year (MGS4, MotorStorm to name a few)?

360: $399 - $100 + $200 = $499

If you're going for purely the HD-DVD/Blueray experience then yea perhaps. From my understanding right now, the PS3 does Blueray in 1080i/1080p or 480p. If you?re looking for 720p I think right now it downgrades the signal for some reason to 480p. If that's not so much an issue I would certainly look at the game lineup this year for both systems before diving in.

Nope, not true...

Well it's part true. The PS3 won't upscale 720p to 1080i. The problem is most tube HDTV's do not support 720P. So basically your PS3 will only downscale the 720p to 480p.

Anyone with a DLP/Plasma/LCD that supports 720p is fine.

As for what to buy? Xbox 360...no question. We have a PS3 that was given to my son and I for Xmas. Neither one of us care for it that much. Xbox Live is lightyears beyond PS3. Not to mention that Sony really doesn't have that many exclusive games anymore and Xbox 360 has a bunch of good games coming out this year.

gotta correct a few things:

firstly, I own a PS3, and my roomies own a 360. i like the PS3 for its simplicity as far as the interface goes, and the built-in BD player is amazing, and many say its one of the best, if not the best at the moment. fast to load and everything.
but as far as 720p goes, it won't happen at the moment when playing BDs. I have a 720p/1080i LCD, and I have to enable 1080i if I want to play a BD. It will downscale/interlace the 1080p picture to 1080i, but it won't downscale to 720p. if 1080p/i is not supported, it will default to 480p. games play at 720p just fine.

as far as the better system, hard to judge. there are many things going to be fixed in upcoming firmware upgrades that may allow the PS3 to rival the 360 in every way as far as functionality goes. 360 has a year up on the ps3, so Microsoft was able to work out the kinks already. give Sony time to work their own kinks out. and as far as software support, well that's also a matter of time. some great games will be headed to the PS3 in the coming year, so its all up to what you prefer more naturally.
the 360 is great, but as far as games go, just doesn't have what I like, and likely the games I like will be sticking to the PlayStation brand.

and for the person who made a hardware sales comment, remember, the PS3 had difficulty coming to market, and negative press has caused a few sales troubles in some markets. but its also not released worldwide at the moment, and doesn't have many system sellers. 360 enjoyed the benefit of being the only next-gen (now current-gen) system out at the time, so people either had to wait or default to it. now competition for sales will be balanced, and as Sony irons a few things out, sales will likely pick up.

First... he made a :p face. Which says to me that he's not 100% serious. "We all hate Sony" was the tongue-in-cheek part, and the $600 comment was more serious because it IS an issue that many people have a problem with. Maybe not to someone who only cares about HD support, but for people who just want to play games it matters a LOT. I would hardly call that "bashing" the PS3.

Secondly, as I've said already, the Xbox was superior to the PS2 and yet the PS2 won the market. Guess what... the PS2 was out for about a year before the Xbox. Funny how that works. The weaker system with a head-start won the market.

As for the "a few good games" comment. Do you really think no one is developing for the Xbox now that the PS3 is on the market? Halo 3 is on the way, as I'm sure are other "good" titles, and even though I wasn't a big fan, it WILL sell, and it'll probably move more consoles too. If Sony doesn't want the PS3 to end up like the original Xbox they have a to do a LOT better than "a few good games".

Try not to be so dense.

the price point for the PS3 would be an issue for someone not worried about next format. this guy wants hddvd or bluray..so the 360 would cost him the same as the PS3...so the money is NOT and issure.

I've said nothing of market and who's going to win in the end. I said throw out the hardware comment and my price point still stands. why are you trying to argue about who will come out in the end? I agree with you that the 360 may win but that doesn't mean they're going to stop making games for PS3.

I NEVER said anything about xbox's game development either! all I said is that people that complain about games aren't remembering the the 360 has been out for a full year longer than the PS3 and to give it time

quit putting words into my mouth

I'm not being a fanboy. I'm being logical. It's logical that the 360 has better games out at this point in time. In fact if they didn't, that'd be rather sad.

I looked at what the OP wants and based on that, the PS3 is a better buy.

Again, you're apparently too dense to grasp what I'm getting at, but here goes. My point is that you're arguing for the PS3 based purely on a subjectively derived hypothetical future. You assert that the PS3 will "get better" over time because "X" games will eventually be available while ignoring the fact that the same will happen to the 360.

My point is to show you, via a short history lesson, that the Xbox flopped compared to the PS2 because of market share and developer support IN SPITE OF THE PS2 BEING TECHNOLOGICALLY INFERIOR (since you're so fond of the PS3 tech). It's safe to assume that unless things change, the 360 is a better (or in your terms, more logical) investment because it has a SIGNIFICANTLY larger user base which translates into developer support and further into more software. So the question is. Do you want a PS3 just to own a few "exclusive" titles? Or do you want a system that will provide a larger library of games out of which there will undoubtedly be a few titles to contend with said "exclusives"?

Again. HD format is moot because HDDVD and BR are neck and neck. Half the other things the OP mentioned are either done minimally by both or not at all, so it DOES come down to which offers more games, and that is the 360. IMHO, the PS3 will only become a "more logical" purchase if it eventually enjoys more competitive market share. If it continues to lag significantly behind the 360 in sales it'll end up just like the original Xbox. A console with very few games that people only buy to mod (or in this case, play with Linux on :p).

ALL, and I mean ALL I am saying is that the PS3 will get its good games too. I understand what you're trying to say about the PS2 and Xbox, but I'm not trying to prove the PS3 will have a bigger library or anything like that. ALL I am saying is that both systems will have good games, it will just take a little while longer for the PS3 because it came out after the 360. Simple really.

BTW, in case you were wondering, my console buying history has been N64, Xbox, and now PS3. I'm not a fanboy for anyone.

Alright, calm it down guys :)

On a side note, can the PS3 stream content from OSX? I don't have a desktop PC.
