1. The PS3 does not have HD out of the box.

2. You didn't include the %25 off the HDDVD player on your initial price comparison

This is a horrible comparison. You are comparing the low end model ps3 to the high end model xbox360. atleast compare the two low models if you are going to do so.

Not to mention, you won't have HD out of the box on the PS3 so you will have to go buy some extra cables to get your HD content.

It would be more like this:

PS3: $499 - $125 + $X (for HD cables) = $375 + $X
360: $299 - $75 + $200 = $425

If you care anything about games, get the Xbox360. You can get the HDDvd Player at Circuit City for $160 too w/their $40 off coupon.

Aye, that's what I got my HD-DVD add-on for @CC a week or two ago. Not sure however if they are still running the coupon, I think amazon may have some kind of deal as well.

It's up to you man. I love my PS3 but the 360 is nice too. I would say if streaming is so important to you then the 360 might be the way to go. If you have, or are getting, a 1080p HDTV in the next 6 months and like using wireless internet; I would suggest the PS3.

Mainly though, I would suggest that if you like playing shooters you test Gears of War's online gameplay and Resistance's online gameplay and see which you prefer. That was the deciding factor for me once I had both systems, and being more of a Quake style fan I prefer Resistance way more than Gears. Plus the host advantage in Gears is terrible.

360 would be better even if it was slightly more expensive. The PS3 will not do well.

I am NOT a fanboy-I had the PS, PS2, the Xbox (and before them, NES, SNES, Genesis, Dreamcast, etc...). I would get every system if I thought they were worth it. The PS3 is NOT worth it.

lol, so i realized the coupon worked on everything, so i bought both the ps3 and the 360 at the same time. I'm 95% sure on the 360 (so i'll just sell the PS3), but I'm gonna make my decision tonight before i put anything up for sale.

Ok, well after browsing the Playstation.com forums, i think I am going with a 360.

#1. PS3 lacks the ability to stream ANY content from OSX. They have a program that lets you download media from OSX -> PS3, but content has to be placed in a separate folder, then transferred across the network. Too many steps for me, i just want to browse my music and play it.

#2. PSP->PS3 connect ONLY works on the 60gb model, so i would have to pay more just for that feature. Negating the price diff.

#3. SACD on the PS3 is useless to me since it can only go through HDMI.

So, that being said, the XBOX 360 is the only system that can do what I want right now. I really do prefer the XMB over the 360 interface, but im not gonna buy a system simply because of that.

that seems like a flawed comparison since you can't do ANY of that on the 360, period. PSP functionality on the premium console is going to get better with age. Hideo Kojima mentioned grand plans for interoperability between the PSP and PS3 for MGS4. other games would likely follow suit.
nothing of that sort exists on the 360.

to me, features wise, it looks like you are looking for the PS3. but it also depends upon which games you'd rather play I guess. and also depends upon which HD disc format you prefer. Personally (forgetting what I have invested in BD), BD has been getting much stronger as a competitor, and sales are higher than HD-DVD. if you are getting one machine or the other with HD as a main reason, that could be the make or break in of itself.

can't do any of that on the 360? The streaming was one of my biggest issues, which can be done on the 360 and not on the ps3.

You'd be surprised ...

If you sold it for $550 on ebay after fee's, shipping, and stuff, it wouldn't net you much extra cash. It just may not be worth it.

I mean the week before xmas I saw premiums that started bids at like $600 that didn't even get one bid before the auction ended.

from OSX? oh my bad then. microsoft likes to lock things, and with no macs, i had to rely on assumptions.
oh and besides, Sony may work on that with a firmware update. i really wouldn't doubt it considering some of the things they already plan on adding.

Um no they're not. HD-DVD is still crushing BD in sales.

I see them selling for $565 BIN + shipping, so if i went $550+ shipping (with a small overhead to cover fees), i will still come out $75+ ahead.

Thats the problem i have right now though, i don't want to buy something with the hope the feature might be available in the future, cause if its not, i waited all that time for nothing.

then forget about the feature and it'll be a surprise later?

seriously, then I guess you have convinced yourself for the 360. I don't support that decision, as besides the nicer controller and one game that I do like (Gears of War), 360 doesn't have what I want in a console, and feels more like a PC than anything, minus the keyboard&mouse combo of a PC. my roomies have it and it feels, sort of like an empty shell. the PS3 is not complete, and I agree it may not be something to rush out and get at the moment. but the 360 was the same way, but they improved things with updates and more game titles began to be released as it aged.

whatever you decide, hope you are happy with it.

i don't remember seeing anywhere that HD-DVD has been 'crushing' BD in sales as of lately. maybe before christmas when BD didn't have much of an offering. But I remember reading that BD had a 20% lead in sales over HD-DVD the week after christmas.

Well, i dunno... To be honest, i WANT to like the PS3 more. I prefer having a single box do everything, not with an attachment drive. I also prefer the XMB much more than the 360 interface. The problem is just that the PS3 can't do what i want right now, your right, it probably will, but when?

Also, any word out on upcoming must haves for the PS3?

Probally is the key word here. Who knows what functionality will be added. With the 360 its already there.

Also, there are rumors of a integrated hddvd drive model for the 360 comming out. You could hold off for a bit and see if it comes true.

I look at it this was too, 360 has better games. I bought my console mostly for gaming/streaming. My 360 does this perfectly.

I hope to use this to replace my modded xbox, so media functionality is impt...

1. I definately want 8lueray or HDDvd, so the price diff narrows significantly.

2. Does either console upconvert DVDs?

3. Any SACD support?

4. Can either view/play streamed music and pictures over a network?

5. For those who own both, which do you prefer?

Gears of war looks awesome, but the 360 interface dosen't appeal to me and i dislike having to use two seperate drives to get high def dvd playback.

The two new consoles don't come close to the functionality of the modded xbox. They can stream, but the formats they can do it in are limited, and the interface is a pale shadow of XBMCs.

I want a box that can stream HD as well as XBMC more than anything else in the world, but it's just not out there right now.

Right now, the PS3 is beating the 360 as far as media streaming goes, but I wouldnt use either to replace XBMC. It's still a better DVD upconverter and network streamer than either of them. I am pretty sure PS3 can do SACD, though. But don't quote me.

BULL Sh!t...
if your gonna flame at least flame and know what youre talking about..
360 will stream ANY format using transcode360..
and does it better than the PS3s web browser service workaround.

well iirc VF5 is coming to both next-gen consoles. but you got Motorstorm (awesomely fun), LAIR (is iffy, but could be halfway decent), Metal Gear Solid 4 later this year, Warhawk sometime in the summer, and Heavenly Sword is supposed to be good. a couple others I am sure, but some are just being projected for this year but realistically that likely won't come true.. like FFXIII, GTA4, and Killzone 2.

Warhawk, Motorstorm, Mercenaries 2, Devil May Cry 4, Metal Gear Solid 4, Killzone 3, Lair, Heavenly Sword, and Tekken 6 are all PS3 exclusives coming out in 07. Expect Final Fantasy XIII in early 08 hopefully.

No, you're wrong. The low end xbox doesn't have a hard drive - the low end PS3 has a 20GB (same as 360). The low end 360 doesn't have a wireless controller. Yes, the high-end 360 comes with WIFI and low end PS3 doesn't - but that's pretty much it. Plus, none of the 360's have HDMI, which the low end PS3 does have.

OP, the PS3 will suit your needs better then the 360 from the sound of it. If you are handy with Linux then PS3 is definitely the console for you.
