Media compatibility, upconverting DVDs, and xbox old games suggest the 360. AFAIK, neither console does sacd. Having played extensively on both, 360 no doubt.

I was under the impression you'd already decided on the PS3 in spite of only... like 3 people recommending otherwise in this whole thread.

Again, I recommend buying a gaming console based on the games you want to play. To me that seems logical. But I'm not nearly as hardcore when it comes to tech as the majority of ATOT.

If you're looking for a cheap HD movie player and not so much a game console, I suggest either waiting, or researching which format has more movies you enjoy and buy based on that.

I was just having this debate today too. I wanted a 360 and never really even considered a PS3. I really didn't even want a 360 until recently when good games started coming out (Dead Rising, Gears of War), but it took almost a year for those games. PS3 already has one (Resistance) certainly with more on the way.

Plus, next-gen media is important to me. Lets be serious, with the PS3, the premium isn't worth it, so you're talking $500 for a base PS3 vs $600 for a 360 + HD-DVD. Plus, PS3 has HDMI.

XBox Live is better than PS3's online, but PS3's is free. I like free.

I never had a PS2 and there are a lot of PS2 games I want to play. I was actually considering buying a used one on EBay.

I think Wii's controller is fun, but too "gimicky" and I wouldn't want it as my primary system. I think sixaxis is much more along the lines of what I would like.

Really, the more I think about it, the more I think PS3 is perfect for what I want.

Well, as for games... I've always loves Racing Games and FPS... Half Life 2 was my perfect game, in fact, the last real game i played from beginning to end. I love graphics, the more eye candy on screen, the happier I am :)

That was a big influence on my decision to buy a Wii. There are a ton of GC games I missed out on while the PS2 and Xbox didn't offer me much. I went out and bought 4 used GC games last week and have been playing them at least as much as Zelda:TP. There are still quite a few I'd like to pick up, and for $5-15 a game it's hard not to. If I hadn't experienced much of the PS2 and really wanted some of its titles I might own a PS3 instead. Same thing with the Xbox/360.

I honestly think people would be happier with their purchases if they just focused on the games they enjoy and not all the hype around the consoles' technology or all the little bells and whistles. I understand if people want to hear opinions or read reviews to get an idea, but once you start getting into "Y console sucks because after you buy 3 controllers and a wireless adapter it's $30 more than Z console" you've lost touch with what console gaming is about.

Because you want one of the new formats, the PS3 is the most logical choice. It has blu-ray built in, not to mention better hardware at the same price of a 360 + HD DVD add-on.

I'm sooooo sick of all these people who bash the PS3. In this situation especially, its the smart thing to do.

BTW, if you are looking for HD gaming, the PS3 is the way to go. It has an HDMI port for 1080p gaming and the 360 doesn't.

If you are looking for wifi internet access, the PS3 60GB has built in network card. 360, doesn't.

Yay! PS3! It has one game...

I hope to use this to replace my modded xbox, so media functionality is impt...

1. I definately want 8lueray or HDDvd, so the price diff narrows significantly.

2. Does either console upconvert DVDs?

3. Any SACD support?

4. Can either view/play streamed music and pictures over a network?

5. For those who own both, which do you prefer?

Gears of war looks awesome, but the 360 interface dosen't appeal to me and i dislike having to use two seperate drives to get high def dvd playback.

1. It depends which one you want really

2. Yes the 360 can do it over VGA cables

3. Not sure.

4. Yes, the 360 can and if you want support for files like XBMC did, you can use either Transcode or VLC360. I prefer VLC360.

5. I only own the 360 mainly for #4.

And GoW is amazing.

Well the upconvert over VGA dosen't help me, my TV only has HDMI and component, but the PS3 dosent upconvert anything anyway, so that issue is moot. PS3 actually has SACD support, but without a multichannel output, it can only go over HDMI, and since i don't have an AC Receiver with HDMI, that won't work either.

So that knocks it down to two issues sharing files from OSX over a network (music/pictures), and games. I do believe the PS3 will eventually have good games, i mean ALL systems do at some point. Resistance looks very cool, and since I don't have a ton of money anyway, I probably wouldn't get more than 1 game for a little while.. GOW on the other hand looks very cool as well, hmmm... All the other games for the systems seem to be a tossup.

I hate to say it, but i really seem to prefer the XMB on the PS3 for my home theater, I am so used to it from my PSP that it just feels natural to me.

So, with that said, can ANYONE please help me find ANY info about sharing music/pics from OSX onto a PS3? Cause if that question gets answered, my decision might be made up.

Ok, well after browsing the Playstation.com forums, i think I am going with a 360.

#1. PS3 lacks the ability to stream ANY content from OSX. They have a program that lets you download media from OSX -> PS3, but content has to be placed in a separate folder, then transferred across the network. Too many steps for me, i just want to browse my music and play it.

#2. PSP->PS3 connect ONLY works on the 60gb model, so i would have to pay more just for that feature. Negating the price diff.

#3. SACD on the PS3 is useless to me since it can only go through HDMI.

So, that being said, the XBOX 360 is the only system that can do what I want right now. I really do prefer the XMB over the 360 interface, but im not gonna buy a system simply because of that.

My understanding is that you either need to use the ORB server or run Linux on the PS3 to stream video/music/pictures through the PS3.

If you run Linux, you open up a ton of options (DVD upconverting, etc).

Does the $500 PS3 have wireless controllers? If not, you will be missing out unless you buy some new controllers. I didn't realize how much I would appreciate having wireless controllers. Now that you're gaming on a large HDTV, you want to sit back a good bit farther than with older systems and being tethered to the game system just sucks. I know you could always buy wireless controllers for the old system...but having it natively supported is just awesome. I can just plop myself down on the couch...press the live button and suddenly I'm playing on the 360.

So anyway, if the $500 system does not include the wireless, at least buy a wireless controller separately.

I personally woulnt want to use orb at all on a HD device... it never was meant to stream high quality video (I love orb but thats not what its use is for). the 360 connect thing is much better for streaming content (because it can pass high quality video... even HD clips) but doenst do all formats (which is its knock) unless you use the tversity thing which has the same problem as orb in that the quality isnt as good.

Plus to access the content it would be via webpage only correct? (I didnt see that orb wrote a ps3 or wii application) so that further negates the usage imo. Using the web to stream content to a ps3 is not a very good way to do things (compared to the integrated approach of the 360 atleast).

I really don't know the details of the ORB...just knew it was out there. It did seem to be "me too press release" when Sony announced ORB would work on the PS3. I agree with your other sediments regarding the quality coming across ORB. The Xbox 360 setup is much more "integrated".

This is a horrible comparison. You are comparing the low end model ps3 to the high end model xbox360. atleast compare the two low models if you are going to do so.

Not to mention, you won't have HD out of the box on the PS3 so you will have to go buy some extra cables to get your HD content.

It would be more like this:

PS3: $499 - $125 + $X (for HD cables) = $375 + $X
360: $299 - $75 + $200 = $425

If you care anything about games, get the Xbox360. You can get the HDDvd Player at Circuit City for $160 too w/their $40 off coupon.

The reason I compared the high end 360 the the low end PS3 is because the low end ps3 is basically fully capable (includes HD, wireless controller, etc), while the 360 base system is not (no HD, no wireless)

And i get 25% off the HD-DVD player as well.
