The sharpness of that combo really comes out in this image, although I'd agree that the OOF part of the plant is distracting. Keep in mind that you don't always need to be shooting wide open, in fact the sharpness of virtually every lens will improve when stopped down a bit. Canon cameras are notorious under-exposers, something to keep in mind when shooting. Always check your histogram.

Actually that shot looks a little bit blurred...perhaps from shooting 1/13 second shutter at 35mm?

You should have bumped the ISO to 200...then you could have gotten a decently hand-holdable shot at around 1/30 sec shutter speed.

Well, if its not shake, then he didn't use a small enough aperture. You can clearly see that parts of the lettering are blurred, and that is not something you can fix via sharpening (e.g. the "mode", "+", and "-" buttons). There wasn't enough DoF to cover the entire flash from the looks of it.

OP, did you shoot this in RAW with no sharpening or did you shoot it in JPEG?

I am just waiting on a nice day and my polarizer to really get into it. havent had the best luck lately, woulda had some nice shots on the lake but I found out one of the batteries the guy gave me is dead, bought two more today so they should arrive soon. At least I have the one batt to play around with.

the image is again a stop (or more) underexposed, still slightly green (although that works for this leafy image), and the excessively bright leaves on the right side distract me from the otherwise pleasing line of the path and tree trunks.

I think this thread is a good example of the statement: the camera doesn't make the pictures, the photographer does. A 1Ds, for all of its virtues, is no better than a Rebel if the person behind the camera doesn't use the 1Ds to its fullest.

Reasons he got 1D: Weather sealing. Perhaps he likes the AF servos better on it too if I were to hazard a guess.

By all means, those were just plain sample shots as far as I can see. It's not like he was saying how 1DS shines and his pictures are masterpieces.

BTW, 1DS, though it's still a great camera, isn't all that special as when it first came out. We now have varieties of FF cameras and image processing has gotton much better over the years.
In terms of IQ, I wouldn't expect much from it. Below 5d at its best.

As noted "In Time", better camera or not, anyone will get better results once they get more familiar with their new gear.... Take two equally good photographers (when measured with same gear), then give one of them all new, better, but notable different gear than he was using previously. Then compare them again... On average, the guy using his old gear will initially get better results than the guy with new superior gear he's still trying to figure out... Of course with a little time and practice the better gear will yield better results, but....

Anyway, back to the OP.... Cool camera, have fun with it! I'm sure you'll enjoy the results you get.... Take your time to play with it in all conditions, good and bad.. It's the work I do in crappy conditions that I learn from the most...

I checked the specs on the 1D Mk. I; strange that it goes up to ISO 3200 while the Ds seemingly only goes up to 1250.

you can always underexpose by 1 stop and bring it up in pp which would give you somewhere between ISO2000 and 3200 (not sure what goes between those two).
