I think it's time for me to join the HDTV era...

I recently came into a large sum of money (legally I might add) and I'm going to get myself a super tv with it. What's the best brand? (I'm leaning to Sony) What's the best type? (I'm leaning towards LCD) What's a good size? (I see a lot of 42") What's a good display stand to get?

I want it to last me for quite a while, about 5 years...

Edit: And where's a good, reliable place to buy from? Newegg seems to have lots of tv's.

I'm not entirely sure waffles will get it done.

I would get a InFocus 4805 projector. I have one and I absolutely freakin' love it. I have a 100" screen and it only cost me $800.

Waffles get everything done. And I really want a real tv and not a projector.

It seems like newegg isn't the best place to shop for a tv...

www.avsforum.com that's where you will get the best answers to this question. Be prepared for some noob finger pointing, but they're all geeks like us.

I'm a fan of the Panny LCDs too.

Some people may see the verticle columns of colors from the colorwheel. Go to a store and check out some TVs before you buy. There might be certain things about the various types that may annoy you.

projectors are nice if you have a dark room. Otherwise, I like the PQ of plasma. DLP is a close second imo. I have a Hitachi RP LCD btw. It's nice, the blacks are no where near the levels of plasma or crt though.

Consider the Westinghouse 37" LCD at Best Buy.

My housemate has the 32". I helped him shop for it - It may not look quite as good as the more expensive ones, but the difference is small.

+ Several hundred dollars cheaper than the next brand.

Simply because they are more expensive to manufacture, not because they are any better.

Panasonic is the best in the business for plasma displays. That model Anubis linked to is a good one.

LCD TV tech is newer which is a big reason to its expense

this panny plasma has no major issues or probs that im aware of, it has a sweet black level and have an absoutly huge viewing angle without the color shift

How much is your budget? (What's a "large sum of money" for a TV?)
What size do you want?

I'd go for a 1080P DLP.
My favorite store for electronics is onecall.
I like Toshiba, only because I've had good luck with their products.

I'm drooling over the Toshiba 72HM195 personally.

However, I'm waiting for 55+inch 1080P displays to come down to around 1500 or so. (Assuming I'll be able to sell my non-hd 61inch Toshiba 61A61 for like $500 to $700 or so)

All I'm really going to do is play video games on it and watch the occassional DVD. My big thing is that for this next generation of consoles I want to make them look as good as is humanly possible. (My PC is fine so don't make this a "consoles suck" thread :p)

Edit: So, LCD isn't better in any way? It just costs more to make? What's it's purpose then?
