Bought a single 14" pizza with 4 toppings from a Mom & Pop last week...27.xx after tax, 29.xx after tip.

Got my local mailer today...Pizza Hut advertising 2 medium (12") 1 topping pizzas, 5 breadsticks, AND 8 wings for $22+tax.

Sorry Mom & Pop, you lose the QPR game.

What would you do ATOT?

Go to Publix, buy some fresh dough from the bakery, and make my own.

Is what we usually do these days, and normally have pizza type toppings/cheese in general for other things.

We only eat out once a week including lunches so we will splurge on the good stuff. Once in awhile we get a taste for chain pizza though.

Are those anchovies on the left pizza of the Pizza Hut ?

Life's too short to eat shitty pizza/food, and this is strange coming from all your previous posts about spending good $ on good food 😀
 
The last time I had pizza from Pizza Hut, it was because a buddy wanted it and it was similar to the deal shown in the photo. The pizza was barely distinguishable from the bread sticks, with a horrible, spongy crust. It was basically bread sticks with a bland sauce, some cheese and pepperoni. Genuinely awful.

I agree, though, that many independent places are little better than the chains, and charge two or three times as much. You just gotta find the right one. There's decent cheap pizza in most towns.

I went there, ordered, and picked it up (ie takeout order). Homie was a jackass to boot.

I should've tipped him what I tip my McDonalds cashier, even though I get better service from the McDonalds cashier.

We used to pick up frozen DiGiornos years ago when they were on sale, but the quality and size has really went into the toilet for years now it seems.

We hadn't even bought any in awhile and the last one we picked up just pretty much sucked IMHO.
 
nah I actually do enjoy cooking, I just work too much for that right now. Maybe in a few years I can get back into it more often.
 
There's a mom and pop one here that is pretty good and they make good poutine, but the issue is if you get a pizza + anything else, at the end it ends up costing like 40 bucks. Vs like 20 bucks if you go with a chain. It's too bad, as I like to support local but, they really need to find a way to get their costs down. Hard to compete with multi nationals though and it's unfortunately only getting worse because world leaders keep pushing for this globalization crap.

I literally just ordered a Dominos right now. lol
 
Quality over Quantity. Pizza Hut just gave you a bunch of bland edibles, while the Mom/Pop is giving you something to enjoy eating. It doesn't always work out that way, some Mom/Pops are pretty bad, but if you want good tasting food you pay more for it.
 
Wow, that's expensive. The high-quality local pizza joint around here is $14 for a medium 2-topping. And I used to think that was expensive compared to the Pizza Hut/Papa John's carry out for something like $8.

Publix is awesome. I wish we had them up here. Beats the shit out of Giant and Shoppers.
 
What would you do ATOT?

I would setup a pizza-at-home system. First, you can make amazing pizza at home. Second, it involves hardly any work once you get everything setup. Don't be fooled into thinking that making incredible pizza at home is hard or time-consuming or can't be done. There are plenty of recipes that don't require any kneading (either no-knead recipes or food processor recipes), can be stored for up to 5 days in the fridge, and can be frozen, so you can prepare a bunch of pizza dough balls ahead of time & just thaw them out whenever. Or do what I do & make pizza like 3 times a week, haha...I always have pizza dough in my fridge. Only takes a few minutes to make the dough, so it's a piece of cake to do dough prep once or twice a week if you want it fresh.

Endless topping variations. I try to mix it up by doing a red pizza, followed by a white pizza, followed by a naked pizza (olive oil & toppings). Lots of recipe variations from standard pepperoni to PB-bacon (seriously amazing) to chicken/green pepper/pineapple (this is like the PB&J of the pizza world). You can also tweak it to make calzones & stuff like spinach pies. Most people have no idea how easy working with dough can be using either the no-knead or food processor techniques. Like literally a minute or two of effort. You can even par-bake the dough itself & just store the partially cooked pies in the freezer so you can top & cook whenever you want a quick meal. Some people even prep the whole pizza, flash-freeze it (just freeze on a cookie sheet for a couple hours, then mummify in saran wrap), and create their own "DiGornios" pizza at a fraction of the cost (I don't know what it costs where you live, but a rising-crust pepperoni from the freezer section is like $8.99 these days!).

Once you get into the habit, it's really easy. Same with bread. I cook fresh bread pretty much daily. I rotate through RideFree's 13-cent recipe with my bread machine, bread machine potato bread, and a standard no-knead loaf. From there you can make sandwiches, toast, pirate eyes, meatloaf, French toast, paninis, all kinds of stuff. I have a little bread-making supplies station setup...literally takes me 2 minutes of prep before going to bed to make RideFree's recipe (cooks & cools overnight so it's warm & ready when I wake up, woot woot)!. Once you get acquainted with the techniques & settle down on some recipes you like, it literally becomes routine to integrate delicious homemade bread & pizza into your diet on a regular basis.

In a nutshell:

1. Buy a decent pizza oven. Breville has a monster toaster oven for $270 (that's less than the cost of 10 of your mom & pop pizzas with tip) that comes with a 13" pizza tray:

2. Get a food processor for making dough. You don't need anything crazy. This $35 model should do it:

3. Practice with a bunch of recipes. Look up pizza dough recipes from Todd English, Mark Bittman, Jim Lahey, and Serious Eats. Tons of variations available too. Kenji just posted an awesome technique for doing a thin-crust pizza using a flour tortilla:
